Did you ever hear about the boycott that is mentioned a lot in the social media these days? When Japan started an economic retaliation by eliminating South Korea from their whitelist, Korea began boycotting Japanese products.
As to explain Japan’s economic retaliation detailedly, our country is continuously demanding an apology from Japan for the Japanese military sexual slavery issue that happened in history. However, Japan not only did not payback any damage that Korea got from the past but also constantly ignored what Korea asked. When Korea kept on forcing them apology, Japan did not give an apology but gave limitation on Korea to export their semiconductors. Many companies in Korea such as Samsung has 90% of Japanese products in their smartphones and appliances. The semiconductors as core parts, Korea is facing difficulties to get the necessities because Japan had made limitations. This was intentional to damage our core industries. Therefore, Koreans are facing Japan by avoiding to purchase Japanese products.
However, the solution of boycotting is unpredictable. The prediction is controversial. Some say that Korea's boycott is not effective because it is just an emotional eruption and is the worst strategy, but others say that the boycott should be constant because the huge part of Japan's exportation business is exporting their products to Korea, so we would be able to reduce Japan’s economic profit.
Another group of people say that although we could damage the growth of Japan’s economy a little, in the end, we would suffer more because Japan’s development is unpredictable.
Nevertheless, according to a survey conducted by TBS, 34.9 % said ‘time to withdraw Japan's economic retaliation’, 28.1% said ‘it would continue after Japan apology for its aggression and reparations’, and 13.2 % said ‘it would continue after Japan's apology for its invasion and reparations’. If Japan does not withdraw its economic retaliation, 76.2 % of the respondents expected it to continue its boycott. 13.0% believes Japan will stop its economic retaliation before we withdraw it.
Some say that the problems between Korea and Japan may cause problems of the exchange with other countries, but it is fortunate that the unity of the Korean citizens does not lead it to the situation in which we have to be concerned at.
