Severe Depression could be Overcome

Recently, Korea had the highest rate of experiencing depression by 13.5% among the OECD major countries. There are many causes of depression: extreme stress from studying, conflict in relationships, social conflict, and physical problems. Often, extreme stress leads to committing suicide.

The root of melancholic depression is from imbalanced neural transmission of the brain. It gradually drops the psychic(mental) function. People’s mood does not get better in response to positive events. A lack of mood reactivity can cause a severe accident. Moreover, as melancholic depression develops, it can be led to ‘Bipolar disorder(Manic depression)’ which causes extreme mood swings including both Hypomania(high mood) and Depression(low). When the mood shifts to hypomania, people feel energetic or even irritable. However, if the mood swings to depression, people feel hopeless, depressed, and lose interest in everything.

In 2013, approximately 585,000 patients suffering with depression visited the hospital. However, in 2018, about 27% of the patients increased which was approximately 750,000 patients visiting the hospital. Surprisingly, the ratio between female patients and male patients were 2:1.

There are many female sexagenarians suffering depression right after their retirement and female octagenarians which are mostly elderlies suffering depression. This is because more females go through hormonal change and different physical causes compared to males. Therefore, women are more likely to experience depression due to the regular hormonal change that results in social or psychological disease.

However, there are different ways to overcome and treat melancholic depression and manic depression before it gets more serious.

In the first stage, continuous physical activities help to ease stress according to the research. In Public Health and nutrition research team and Koryu University, Ansan Hospital neuropsychiatry’s Professor Han did an experiment aiming at approximately 7 thousand people depending on their gender, exercising habit, and how frequent they drink alcohol, etc. The result demonstrated that females can be affected positively in mental function if they exercise regularly more than males. Thus, regularly and constantly exercising will help overcome mental diseases.

Psychology consultation can also cure depression by helping the patients to have a positive mindset. There are various drug treatments to overcome depression, but mental diseases are mostly caused by the psychological problem, therefore psychology consultation will be a good method to overcome.

In conclusion, many people are suffering from severe depression, however, various treatments could help them to overcome the depression.
