To Stand or not to Stand

Nowadays, people say that sitting is as detrimental as smoking, entailing the appearance of many sit-stand desks. However, is this trend truly beneficial?
 April Chambers, an assistant professor of bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, and colleagues from Tufts University conducted a research on the various effects of a standing desk on health and work.
Concerning work benefits, the research did not find any prominent effect. The sit-stand desks, which you alternate between sitting and standing, do not help people to concentrate but do not make them less concentrated either. Even though they can alleviate drowsiness, the sit-stand desks have not shown any boost in productivity.
 Moreover, the effects on health are not dramatic. The researchers do point out that most of the studies have focused on younger adults than middle-aged or overweight adults, which is why the results might not show much contribution to health. Chambers said that improvement in discomfort, as people used the standing desks, was consistent in the studies. People with different shapes and types of bodies such as, adults with obesity, back pain, and even healthy people felt the same.
 Previous studies have found sitting for an extended amount of time with no physical activity was similar to the risk of death from obesity and smoking. Alzheimer’s and a negative impact on the brain were also linked to a sedentary lifestyle. These studies have urged people to convert to standing desks. However, incorrect adjustment of the height of standing desks have also proven to be more detrimental than sitting, causing back pain and neck strain, vein issues, and more.
 This brings one question. If both sitting and standing are unhealthy, then what is? The answer is to do both. Moving around and doing physical activities are the best method for a healthy lifestyle. Alternating between standing and sitting is the key, as well as posture while in either position. Chambers asserted based on the research that alternating between sitting and standing improved posture while seated. With the help of anti-fatigue mats, one can maintain good posture and lead a healthier lifestyle taking turns sitting and standing.
