Sand is a crucial factor for producing one of mankind’s most essential products - concrete. Our Earth consists of approximately 7.5 x 1018 grains of sand. This massive amount of sand is being severely depleted at a dangerously fast pace. According to the BBC, people use “27 billion tonnes a year in construction and that this will double to 55 billion tonnes by 2060”. The main cause of the overconsumption of sand is rapid urbanization followed by rising demands for infrastructure and concrete. It is not surprising to hear that mankind is destroying the Earth’s environment. The overconsumption of sand to manufacture concrete poses severe environmental threats to people and the economy.

According to BBC, concrete manufacturing accounts for 7% of global CO2 emissions. Besides, numerous countries are illegally extracting sand from river banks, causing violent tides. As a result, coastal residents are more vulnerable to storms because the large amount of coastal sand that normally alleviates violent water flows are removed. In the short term, the effects of the overconsumption of sand seem inconsequential, but in the long term, the overuse of sand will constantly deplete our Earth. The main issue at the moment is that the consumption of sand is outpacing nature’s ability to re-create sand. Currently, experts and environmentalists are searching for methods to reduce the negative environmental impact caused by this mass consumption. They are researching and developing alternatives for sand that can still satisfy our demands for concrete for our building industry. Yet, efforts to achieve sustainability must be taken initiative by everyone involved in the construction industry, directly or indirectly. Firms directly related to the construction industry have several innovative, sustainable solutions to develop. BBC states plastic can replace 10% of sand in concrete, reducing the use of illegally extracted sand and plastic in landfills. If we fail to sustain our sand, we might encounter a day without sandcastles on the beach.

빠른 속도로 고갈되는 모래 위기

모래는 인류의 가장 필수적인 제품 콘크리트를 생산하는 데 중요한 요소이다. 우리 지구는 7.5 x 1018개 정도의 모래 알갱이로 이루어져 있는데, 이 엄청난 양의 모래는 빠른 속도로 고갈되고 있다. 사람들이 연간 270억 톤을 건설에 사용하고 있으며 이는 2060년까지 550억 톤으로 두 배가 될 것이라고 BBC는 보고했다. 모래의 과잉소비를 유발하는 주요 이슈는 기반시설과 급속한 도시화이다. 콘크리트를 제조하기 위한 모래의 과다 소비는 인간과 경제에 심각한 위협을 주고, 더 나아가 지구 환경을 크게 파괴하고 있다.

콘크리트 제조는 전세계 이산화탄소 배출량의 7%를 차지한다고 한다. 그뿐만 아니라, 강둑에서 모래를 불법적으로 추출하여 강물 흐름이 완화되지 못한채 더욱 격렬해져, 결과적으로 모래 해안에 거주하는 주민들은 폭우에 대한 취약성이 더 높아졌다. 단기적으로 볼 때, 모래의 과다 소비로 인한 영향은 그렇게 큰 문제가 아닌 것처럼 보일 수도 있다. 하지만 모래의 과도한 사용은 장기적으로 우리의 지구를 끊임없이 고갈시켜 지속 가능하지 않게 할 것이다. 현재 주된 쟁점은 모래의 소비가 자연의 모래 재생 능력을 증가하고 있다는 것이다. 지금 이 기사를 읽고 있는 독자도 직접적 또는 간접적으로 우리가 어떻게 모래 소비에 영향을 미치고, 궁극적으로 지구의 재생 불가능한 자원들 중 하나인 모래를 고갈시킬 수 있는지 되돌아 보야한다.
