This year, in commemoration of March 1st Independence Movement, KB Financial Group Inc. re-composed the song, ‘Korea is Alive’ that speaks on the female Independence activists’ spirit in the Movement era.

This song was sung by seven Independence activists who had been imprisoned in Cell No.8 at Seodaemun Prison. The Prison had been formerly used during the Japanese colonial period to imprison thousands of Korean liberation activists.

There were a total of seven prisoners in No. 8 cell: Hwang Hwa Kim, Ae Ra Kwon, Gwan Bin Shin, Myung Chul Shim, Myung Ae Lim, Yun-hee Eo, and Gwansun Yoo.

Despite being subjected to horrific conditions during their imprisonment, including sexual tortures, they continued composing and singing songs of Independence, out of which came ‘Korea is Alive’.

A century later, the lyrics were unveiled by the son of Shim, Myung Chul liberation activist. KB Inc. then released ‘Korea is Alive,’ which was composed by Jae Il Jung, sung by Lena Park, and narrated by Yuna Kim.
In an interview, director Jung told his intentions for making this song. “Remembering and recalling those who have sung this song, they must have had feelings of both horrendous misery and despair. Adding this new melody, I tried to make the song that we all can remember as a means of drawing hopes for the future.”

This song had made President Moon burst into tears at the Blue House Independence Activists Appreciation Event in last August.
President Moon mentioned ‘Korea is Alive’ during his speech at the Appreciation Event, stating “Cell No. 8 in Seodaemun Prison is where Yoo, Gwansun liberation activist had been confined. I believe the song will be long remembered in our hearts.”

Even though the seven liberation activists are still not well-known, let’s hope that this song will provide a chance for people to ruminate about their commitment to independence.

다시 부르는 여옥사 8 호실의 노래 '대한이 살았다'

올해 KB 국민은행은 3.1 운동 및 대한민국 임시정부 수립 100 주년을 맞아 여성 독립운동가 7인의 얼이 담긴 노랫말을 실제 노래로 재탄생 시켰다. 이 노래는 3.1 독립운동 시기에 서대문형무소 여옥사 8호실에 갇혀있던 7명의 여성 독립운동가들이 부른 노래이다. 유관순 열사는 물론 김향화 지사, 권애라 지사, 신관빈 지사, 심명철 지사, 임명애 지사와 어윤희 지사까지 모두 독립열망으로 가득 차 옥쟁투쟁본부라고 불린 8호실의 수감자였다. 그들은 성고문 등 처참했던 수감생활에도 불구하고 독립 염원이 담긴 노래 가사를 만들어 부르며 독립의 열망을 키워나갔고 서로를 격려했다. 그리고 100년 뒤 심명철 지사의 아들에 의해 노랫말이 공개 됐다.

KB 국민은행은 음악감독 정재일이 작곡하고 가수 박정현이 노래를, 김연아가 내레이션을 한 ‘대한이 살았다’ 영상을 공개 하고 음원을 무료로 배포했다. 그 때 그 뜨거웠던 노래를 대한민국에 다시 알리고 싶었던 정재일은 “이 노래를 직접 부르셨을 분들을 떠올리면서 참혹하고 절망적인 심정이셨을 텐데 새로운 선율을 붙일 때는 미래를 그리는 희망을 그리는 선율로 만들어 봐야겠다고 생각했습니다. 잊지 않도록 기억할 수 있도록 대한민국 모두가” 라고 인터뷰를 통해 작곡의도를 전했다.

이 노래는 지난 8월 청와대 독립유공자 및 후손 초청 오찬에서 문재인 대통령을 뜨거운 눈물을 흘리게 한 바 있다. 문 대통령은 “서대문형무소 여옥사 8호실은 유관순 열사께서 옥고를 치르신 방입니다. 그 방에서 울려 퍼진 ‘대한이 살았다’의 노랫말이 오래도록 국민들의 가슴에 남을 것 같습니다"라고 말했다.

비록 역사에는 잘 알려지지 않았지만 끝까지 일제에 대항하며 대한민국을 지켜낸 7인의 여성 독립운동가들의 기개와 용기가 이 노래를 계기로 더욱 많이 알려지기 희망한다.
