African Swine Fever(ASF) is a contagious pig disease. It has a high mortality rate of 100%, while humans and other animals are not susceptible to ASF.

ASF is usually prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa as an endemic disease. The disease was first discovered in Kenya in 1921. The first outbreak in Europe happened in Portugal in 1957, and since then the disease started to spread from Western Europe to Eastern Europe and East Asia. The first outbreak in Asia happened in Liaoning province in China in 2018, and this year ASF was also found in Southeast Asia countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. The first outbreak in Korea occurred in Paju on September 17.

According to the World Organization for Animal Health(OIE), ASF is transmitted through infected pigs' tissue, blood, secretion, and extortion. The virus still survives after an infected pig dies. Since ASFV can survive for three to six months in uncooked pork, indirect transmission is possible through feeding garbage containing contaminated meat. Also, contaminated clothes, vehicles, and equipment can spread ASF.

Domestic pigs and wild boars in endemic areas are virus carriers. Warthogs, serve as natural reservoirs of ASF, show no symptom of the disease. Pigs can be infected when they were bitten by soft ticks containing the virus. Symptoms of ASF are high fever of 40°C to 42°C, eye discharges, vomiting, bleeding in skin and organs, and anorexia. The incubation period of ASF varies from 4 to 19 days, and infected pig dies in 6 to 13 days if the virus is highly virulent.

Still, there is no treatment or vaccine for ASF. When the virus is found, it is immediately reported to the OIE, and international trading with pork products should be stopped. Rapid slaughtering and disposal of infected pigs are essential. Moreover, further investigation and surveillance of the infected area and its surrounding area are required.

In Korea, ASF was found in 14 areas. Wild boar in the border area is one of the possible causes of the spread of ASF. On September 15, the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA) added Korea in the list of countries ASF is spread and banned most of the import of pork products.

한국에서 발생한 아프리카 돼지열병

아프리카 돼지열병(African Swine Fever, ASF) 은 DNA 바이러스성 돼지 전염병이다. 다른 동물이나 사람에게는 감염이 되지 않고 돼지과에 속하는 동물들만 감염이 되는데 치사율이 거의 100%에 달한다.

아프리카 돼지열병은 1921년 케냐에서 처음으로 발견된 병으로 주로 사하라 남부 지역에서 풍토병으로써 발견된다. 1957년 유럽으로 퍼지면서 전 세계로 퍼지는 계기가 되었다. 포르투갈, 스페인, 프랑스, 이란, 러시아 등 서유럽에서 동유럽으로 퍼졌다. 동아시아에서는 2018년 중국의 랴오닝성에서 처음으로 발견되었고, 올해 베트남, 태국, 캄보디아를 포함한 동남아시아 국가까지 퍼졌다. 한국에서는 지난달 17일 파주시 한 농장에서 첫 발견이 되었다.

세계동물보건기구(OIE)에 따르면 ASF는 감염된 돼지의 피, 조직, 분비물 혹은 배설물을 통해 감염이 된다. ASF 바이러스는 생존력이 강한 바이러스로 감염된 돼지가 죽은 후에도 남아 있다. 조리되지 않은 돼지고기의 경우 바이러스가 3달에서 6달까지 남아있기 때문에 오염된 돼지고기를 돼지에게 사료로 급여하면 간접전파의 가능성이 있다. 또한, ASF에 오염된 차량, 장비, 옷 등도 간접전파의 위험성이 있다.

아프리카 돼지열병의 숙주는 사육 돼지와 야생 멧돼지이다. 자연숙주인 혹멧돼지는 감염돼도 아무런 증상을 보이지 않아 조심해야 한다.
또한, 감염된 돼지를 문 물렁 진드기(soft tick)가 건강한 돼지를 물 경우 바이러스가 전염된다. 질병의 증상으로는 40-42도에 이르는 고열, 결막염, 구토, 식욕감소, 경련, 피부와 내부장기의 출혈 등이 있다. 잠복기는 4일에서 19일까지 다양하고, 고병원성 바이러스의 경우 감염된 돼지는 보통 6-13일 사이에 죽는다.

아프리카 돼지열병은 아직까지 세계적으로 사용 가능한 백신이나 치료제가 없다. 만약 바이러스가 발견된다면 즉시 OIE에 발생 사실을 보고하고 돼지와 관련된 국제교류를 모두 중단해야 한다. 더 큰 피해를 막기 위해 감염된 돼지의 빠른 도살과 처분이 필요하다. 또, 바이러스가 퍼진 경로를 조사하고 오염된 지역과 그 주변 지역에 감시를 하는 것이 중요하다.

아프리카 돼지열병은 한국에서 총 14곳에서 발견되었다. 원인은 접경지역의 야생 멧돼지가 바이러스를 퍼트린 것으로 예상된다.

미국 농무부 산하 동식물검역청은 지난달 25일 한국을 아프리카 돼지열병의 영향을 받은 국가 명단에 추가하고 대부분의 돼지고기 수입을 금지시켰다.
