A sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, is making a prominent change around the world. Starting from a solo protest in Sweden, Thunberg is currently leading over 1.6 million teenagers from over 130 countries to protest against environmental exploitation and to push government officials globally to take climate action in preserving the environment, as reported by The Hankyoreh. In her UN climate speech, Thunberg harshly pointed out that developed countries including Germany, the UK, France, Australia, and Japan, should be taking the lead in reducing global warming. The world is hearing Thunberg’s initiative, fierce call for action, and Thunberg has become the youngest person nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Friday Strike movement also spread to South Korea, causing a sequential impact of three historical “school strikes”.

On Friday, September 27th, the third “school strike” was held in South Korea, where students marched from Gwanghwamoon to the Blue House. This School Strike for Climate protest was organized by Kim Yu-jin (17), a member of the Youth Climate Action Movement. According to Chosun Ilbo, more than 500 students participated. On this day, several students met the Chief Secretary of Civil Society Administration, Song Jae-bong, and proposed four key requirements for the Korean government to fulfill.

While the younger population is amplifying its voice worldwide, policy modifications and government action take time to adjust. Nevertheless, there are immediate steps that can be taken to prevent the rapid generation of waste and the loss of essential natural resources. Five mindful ways people can be more environmentally friendly in their daily lives include using reusable bags instead of plastic bags; saving electricity by turning off lights when unused; saving water in the bathroom; walking or cycling rather than riding automobiles. Now is the time for more students to take initiative and actively protect the environment.

기후 시위를 위한 학교 파업

그레타 툰베리라는 16세의 스웨덴 기후 운동가가 전 세계적으로 변화를 일으키고 있다. 툰베리는 스웨덴에서 단독 시위를 시작한 이후 현재 130여 개 나라의 160만 명의 청소년들을 이끌고 환경 착취에 항의하여 전 세계적으로 정부 관리들이 환경보존에 대한 기후 조치를 취하도록 촉구하고 있다. 툰베리는 유엔 기후 연설에서 독일, 영국, 프랑스, 호주, 일본 등 선진국들이 지구 온난화 저감에 앞장서야 한다고 맹렬히 지적했다. 세계는 툰베리의 주도적인 행동요구를 듣고 있으며, 그녀는 노벨평화상 후보에 오른 최연소 인물이 되었다.  시위 운동은 한국으로도 확산되어 세 번의 역사적인 학교 파업에 영향을 끼쳤다.

9월 27일 금요일, 한국에서 세 번째 학교 파업이 열렸고, 학생들은 광화문에서 청와대로 행진했다. 이번 '기후 시위를 위한 학생 시위'는 청소년 기후 행동 소속 김유진(17) 학생이 주관했다. 조선일보에 따르면, 500명 이상의 학생들이 참가했다고 한다. 이날 몇몇 학생들은 송재봉 시민사회행정실장을 만나 한국 정부가 이행해야 할 4가지 핵심요건을 제시했다.

청소년들이 전세계적으로 목소리를 높이고 있는 반면, 정책 수정과 정부 조치가 이뤄지기에는 시간이 걸린다. 자연을 보호하기 위한 충분한 조치가 취해질 때까지 지구 온난화와 환경오염은 더 급격히 악화될 수 있다. 하지만 급속한 폐기물 발생과 필수 천연자원의 상실을 막기 위해 취할 수 있는 즉각적인 조치들이 있다. 사람들이 일상 생활에서 더욱 환경 친화적일 수 있는 방법으로는 비닐 봉투 대신 재사용 가능한 가방을 사용하는 것, 사용하지 않을 때 불을 꺼서 전기를 절약하는 것, 화장실에서 물을 절약하는 것, 자동차를 타는 것보다 걷거나 자전거를 타는 것 등이 있다. 이제는 더 많은 학생들이 솔선수범하여 환경을 적극적으로 보호할 때이다.
