Recently, more people are looking for forests for ‘healing’ themselves physically and mentally.
Why are forests good for people? Forest provides clean, fresh air, and helps cure environmental diseases such as atopic dermatitis. It also plays an important role in sleep and cancer treatment by providing phytoncide, a healing substance, and also affects the mental health of people who are suffering from various stresses.

The forests provide clean and fresh air. These days, when fine dust is a problem, people buy air purifiers at home. However, forests are free natural air purifiers. According to a study by the National Forest Research Institute, the average concentration of fine dust in urban and forest areas was measured over several days, and the result was that the concentration of fine dust in urban areas is almost twice as high as forest areas. Even when fine dust in the city is at bad levels, forests, remain at normal levels. Therefore, If you go on outdoor activities such as exercising, doing it in the forest is much better for breathing than in the city.

Atopic dermatitis often becomes more severe when the fine dust is at a high rate. Recent studies found that fine dust penetrates into the dermis through the damaged skin and causes inflammation. In forest areas, air pollutants and suspended solids decrease, resulting in less atopic dermatitis. Also, when you are in the forest, the skin temperature drops and this has a good effect on a variety of inflammatory skin diseases.

One of the other things we can get from the forest is phytoncide, which comes from forest trees. Alpha-pinene of phytoncide helps people sleep well. While sleeping pills induce sleeping by lowering the quality of sleep, spending a lot of time in the forest helps people sleep soundly without reducing the quality of sleep. It is also known that phytoncide is helpful in treating cancer. According to the study, a major role in the treatment of cancer is natural killer cells and phytoncide increases the amount of it and making it more active.

According to a recent study on the “Link between urban forests and depression symptoms”, people living in large urban forest areas have an average 18.7 percent lower risk of depression than those who do not. The green plants, fresh air, and various sounds of nature of forest help people relieve stress and heal their emotions. For modern people who suffer from various stresses, forests have a good effect on mental health.

A lot of people prefer to live in the city center for convenience. However the place close to the forest could be better for humans to live than a complete city center. If it is difficult to live near a forest, going to the forest and spending a lot of time is highly beneficial for health.
