'A man like God written in the Bible,' a villager in Tonj described Father Lee Tae Seok, called John Lee.
On January 14th, Father Lee Tae Seok marked the 10th anniversary of his death.
Father John Lee, who was the ninth of ten children, became the priest after graduating from Inje University College of Medicine. In 1999, Father John Lee visited Tonj, South Sudan, for the first time and said, "I felt like this place is the poorest place in the world. I feel like could do something even though I am not capable of it."
In 2001, Father John Lee returned to Tonj after receiving a priestly ordination and started to build a hospital. More than three hundred people a day visited Father John Lee since he was the only doctor in Tonj. "Father John Lee always helped not only the poor but also any people who needed help," a Hansen's disease patient in Tonj said.
When the hospital settled down, Father John Lee founded Tonj Don Bosco Elementary, Middle, and High School. "Would Jesus build a school first or a cathedral first at this place?" Father John Lee said. "No matter what, I think he would build the school first." Where children who were broken by the war could dream of their future, Father John Lee believed it is a school.
Music was another gift that Father John Lee gave to children. Father John Lee created a 35-member Brass Band to plant seeds of joy and hope in his children. The youngest member Brindley said, "He was the first person was affectionate and caring."
To the Tonj people, Father John Lee was a priest, doctor, educator, musician, architect, or much more than that.
The tragedy occurred when Father John Lee visited South Korea in 2008: stage 4 colon cancer. On January 14th, 2010, Father John Lee passed away at the age of 48.
On the 10th anniversary of the death of Father John Lee, people engaged in various activities to remember him. On January 9th, a film about the hidden story of Father John Lee "Don't Cry for Me Sudan: Shukran Baba" was released. On January 12th, a mass was held at the Sales Cathedral in Gwangju to commemorate Father John Lee. On January 14th, a memorial hall, located next to his birthplace in Busan, opened.
When people asked why he had to go to Africa, Father John Lee replied: "There is a beautiful scent that has affected my mind." The word of Jesus that what you did to the most humble man was what you did to yourself, Dr. Schweitzer, who gave up everything and devoted his life to Africa, the devotion of the priest and the nun he saw in a nearby orphanage when he was young, and the noble life of his mother, who sacrificed for ten children. Father John Lee said it was a beautiful scent that moved his mind.
The Tonj people will never forget the man who came to them and became a flower.
