Recently, the conflict between Ajou university hospital and Dr.Lee-Guk jong, the head of a trauma center in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province, has become an issue. The start of the case was released from the transcript of the chief of Ajou university hospital swearing to Dr.Lee to the media. Both sides are coming up with different opinions on their conflict. According to Dr.Lee, Ajou university hospital has not spent the government subsidies for the trauma center for the right purpose. Moreover, he mentioned that the hospital refused to give wards to trauma patients even though there were empty wards available for the patients. However, the hospital disavowed all of the facts that Dr.Lee mentioned. Their stance for not providing the wards was that they were going under internal reconstruction for a month. Amid the escalating conflict, the Ajou university professor association had handed the written signature demanding Ajou university hospital’s director resignation, and Dr.Lee had announced his resignation as the head of the trauma center.

The resignation of the head of the trauma center was Dr.Lee’s own choice, but he was upset at his own decision that he had to make in an interview. - “It feels like my efforts were in vain. I can’t do it anymore.” He seemed to be both physically and mentally exhausted.
However, his main reasoning for the resignation was because of his guilt. He revealed that he was okay with others insulting him, but he did not want the vicious cycle to cause a nuisance to others. This interview had again demonstrated his kind heart.

Dr.Lee’s absence will hurt the nation’s medical development but most of all, the trauma center is expected to deal with the biggest blow. Naturally, the medical staffs of the trauma center will lose their morale, and the doctor helicopter will face difficulties being operated due to the shortage of manpower.

 Truly, the issues of his resignation was a shock, but the netizens were supporting his choice as well as feeling sorry for him. It was because the fact of him looking after the patients more than his health even during harsh situations was already widely known. This incident had reflected the nation's disastrous civic consciousness. Inadequate social regionalism had finally destroyed the dream of a man who worked day and night to make a proper functioning trauma center for the patients at the threshold of death.

진정한 외상센터장을 잃어버린 안타까운 현실

이국종 교수가 외상센터를 포기할 수밖에 없었던 우리나라의 사회여건

최근, 아주대병원과 아주대병원 경기 남부권의 외상센터장인 이국종 교수의 갈등이 이슈가 되고있다. 사건의 발단은 언론에 공개된 아주대병원장의 욕설이 담긴 녹취록이었다. 이 녹취록을 계기로 이국종 교수와 아주대병원 측은 상반된 의견을 내놓고 있다. 이국종 교수의 주장에 따르면, 아주대병원 측은 외상센터를 위한 정부의 보조금을 모두 외상센터에 쓰지 않았으며, 본관에 병실이 남았음에도 불구하고 중증외상환자들에게 병실을 내주지않아 외상센터가 57차례 문을 닫게 했다고 한다. 그러나 아주대병원 측은 이 사실들을 전면 부인하며 본관 병실을 내주지 못한 까닭은 한 달 동안 실시된 내부공사 때문이라고 한다. 갈등이 고조되는 가운데, 아주대 교수회는 아주대병원장의 사퇴를 요구하는 서명서를 제출하였고 이국종 교수는 외상센터장 사임을 선언하고 향후에는 아주대학의 평교수로 지낼 것을 선언하였다.

경기남부권역외상센터장 사임은 이국종 교수 스스로가 내린 결정이었지만 그는 자신이 내릴 수밖에 없었던 결정에 큰 아쉬움을 표했다. 타 매체의 인터뷰에서 그는 자신이 만들었고 20년 동안 지켜낸 외상센터를 떠나는 데에 아주 복잡한 심경이라고 말했다. 그는 “이제 더는 못하겠다”, “헛수고를 한것 같다” 며 육체적으로도, 정신적으로도 많이 지친 듯한 기색을 보였다. 그러나 그가 외상센터를 떠나게 된 주된 이유는 주변 사람들에 대한 미안한 마음 때문이었다. 자신이 욕을 먹는것은 괜찮으나 자신이 센터장을 하면서 반복되는 악순환이 더이상 주변인들에게 피해를 끼지게 할 수는 없다고 밝혀 그의 선한 심성을 또 한 번 보여주었다.

이국종 교수의 부재는 우리나라 의료발전에도 손실을 주겠지만 경기 남부권역 외상센터가 받을 타격이 가장 클 것으로 예상된다. 의료진의 사기가 떨어지는 것은 물론 인력부족 문제로 인한 의료진 탑승불가 방침 또한 이국종 교수가 세웠기 때문에 당장의 닥터헬기 운영에도 어려움이 있을 것이라고 외상센터의 의료진들이 말했다.

이국종 교수의 외상센터장 사임 선언은 많은 시민들에게 충격을 안겨 주었지만 네티즌들은 그의 사임에 아쉬워하는 반면, 그의 선택에 옹호하는 태도를 보였다. 닥터헬기 소음 민원과 아주대병원의 좋지 못한 시선 속에 자신의 건강보다 환자들을 우선시 하는 이국종 교수의 행실은 이미 잘 알려져 있었기 때문이다. 이 사건은 우리나라의 참담한 시민의식을 비추어 주었다. 죽음의 문턱에 선 외상환자를 구하고자 밤낮으로 일하며 제대로 기능을 할 수 있는 외상센터를 만들고자 노력해온 현대에 보기드문 의인의 꿈이 부적절한 사회 지역이기주의로 무너진 것 같아 안타깝다.
