Parasite: Writing History for South Korea
À̹®Çü °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2020.02.05 19:48

Bong Joon-ho’s recent black comedy thriller Parasite has been a smashing success, both domestically and internationally. The film first won acclaim by winning the Palme d’Or, the Cannes Film Festival’s top award. Afterward, it has won the Best Motion Picture ? Foreign Language at the Golden Globes, four Bafta nominations, and six Oscar nominations. The six Oscar-nominated categories are Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, and Best International Feature Film of the Year.

If Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite wins an Oscar, it would be the first Korean film in history. It would set a stellar example of the rising popularity and success of the Korean film industry internationally. South Korea is the fifth leading film market by gross box office revenue following the US, China, Japan, and the UK. Leading the Korean wave in the film industry are directors Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden), Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, Host, Okja, and Parasite), and Kim Jee-Woon (I Saw the Devil).

The movie itself is about two families, the poor Kim family, and the rich Park family. The Kim family lives in a decrepit basement flat, while the Parks live in a huge mansion. After finding employment at the Park’s family, the Kims infiltrate the wealthy Parks by living off of them. The movie is a strong social satire with the main themes such as inequality, capitalism, and greed. Blowing everybody’s expectations away, this anti-capitalist film has won over both the critics and the audiences.

While many of the movie’s themes show the critical flaws in today’s society, they may have been exaggerated following global trends. Nevertheless, Parasite raises awareness of class discrimination, and whether it wins an Oscar or not, it has written history as the first Korean film to be nominated for Best Picture of the Year.
