Those who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder happen to have a decreased number of brain cells in the corpus amygdaloideum, which controls our emotional behaviors, a ‘fear detector, and in the hippocampus which controls learning and memory. This causes them lack of empathy, and this affects their moral agency which makes it difficult for them to have normal social interaction and communication with others. Since empathy and autism are very closely related to each other, assessing and developing the ability to feel empathy is very essential to diagnose and treat autism.
Dr. Marco Iacoboni, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA says that “Assessing empathy is often the hardest in the populations that need it most. Empathy is a cornerstone of mental health and well-being. It promotes social and cooperative behavior through our concern for others. It also helps us to infer and predict the internal feelings, behavior, and intentions of others.” Moreover, “brain activity within these networks can reveal people's empathic disposition." He emphasizes the importance of empathy in mental disorders that it is the most essential factor which associates with and is one of the major causes of many psychiatric disorders, it could be the main key for therapy.
Researchers of the University of California - Los Angeles Health Sciences have discovered that it is possible to sense one’s empathy while their brain is at rest. This makes them able to assess an individual’s ability to feel empathy by only observing their brain activity without engaging any particular psychological assessments. This discovery provides an alternative method to assess the empathy of those who have difficulty filling out questionnaires, such as people who have severe psychiatric disorders like autism or schizophrenia.
For this experiment, researchers have recruited 58 female and male participants who are at ages 18 to 35. To collect the brain activity data, they used fMRI(functional magnetic resonance imaging) to scan their brains and observed the activity in specific brain networks that are intimately related to empathy. They also used machine learning, which is an artificial intelligence that can sense subtle patterns of the data, while they told the participants to rest, making their eyes look at a black screen. After scanning, participants went through questionnaires that are used to measure empathy. Researchers measured how precisely they could predict the participants’ empathic ability by studying the brain activity within the network, and compared them with the results of the questionnaires.
According to Iacoboni, through this discovery, it made us able to assess the empathic disposition through analyzing the brain activity inside the brain network. This makes it better for people with psychiatric illness to get treatments.
