Recently, people around the world are terrified of Corona19. The official name of Corona19 is Coronavirus Infection-19 (COVID-19), which is a respiratory infectious disease caused by a new type of coronavirus (SARS-Co-V-2). It first broke out in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, and has spread around the world. The World Health Organization declared an “International public health emergency" on Jan. 30 as Corona19 spread over several countries around the world. 
 
Corona19's pathogen is identified as a new coronavirus. It is a viral pathogen that is transmitted among wild animals. Regarding the cause of the first spread of the coronavirus to people, some experts argue that it is due to the habit of eating bat meat in some countries. In the early days of Corona 19, people assumed that the virus originated from wild animals traded at the fish wholesale market in Wuhan, China, but it was not exactly proved.
 
The early symptoms of Corona-19 such as high fever, coughing, and dyspnea would go on for 2 to 14 days period of time and eventually reveal similar symptoms to pneumonia. Early symptoms of throat cold such as sore throat, chills, and muscle aches, but coughs, phlegm, and high fever decrease the lung function. If further progress is made, phlegm, coughing becomes severe, chest pain and difficulty breathing appear when breathing. If this gets worse, the lungs can be damaged, leading to respiratory failure and death. However, there have been cases of people who have recently confirmed that they do not feel the symptoms.
 
Corona19 is transmitted by droplet infection. When an infected person coughs and sneezes, a small droplet of saliva and bacteria are mixed to infect others. The normal travel distance of it is known to be 2 meters. In the case of eyes, saliva, etc. of infected patients can enter the eyes directly or rub their eyes with hands contaminated with the virus, which can be transmitted through the eyes. For this reason, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing hands and wearing masks. 
 
In South Korea, the number of confirmed patients remained at around 30 until Feb. 17 after Chinese people who visited the country were confirmed to be the first to be infected on Jan. 20. However, the number of patients increased rapidly to approximately 2,000 through a certain religious group, mainly in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, on Feb. 20. Social tensions over Corona19 have escalated further, with mask shortages taking place in the markets and academic schedules pushed back in each class of schools and online shift being encouraged at companies. Although the government is making various efforts to establish the Central Accident Investigation Headquarters and the Central Discharge Countermeasures Headquarters, it is still uncertain whether the spread of the Corona19 will abate.

전 세계를 떨게 하는 코로나19의 공포

최근 전 세계 사람들은 코로나19의 공포에 휩싸였다. 코로나19의 공식 명칭은 코로나바이러스 감염증-19(COVID-19)로, 이것은 새로운 유형의 코로나바이러스(SARS-Co-V-2)에 의한 호흡기 감염질환이다. 코로나19는 2019년 12월 중국 우한에서 처음 발생한 뒤 전 세계로 확산되었다. 코로나19가 전 세계 여러 나라로 확산되자 WHO(세계보건기구)에서는 1월 30일 '국제 공중보건 비상사태'를 선포했다.

코로나19의 병원체는 신종 코로나바이러스로 밝혀졌다. 이것은 야생동물 사이에서 전염되는 바이러스성 병원체이다. 코로나바이러스가 최초로 사람에게 전파된 원인에 대해 일부 전문가들은 몇몇 국가에서 박쥐고기를 섭취하는 습관 때문이라고 주장한다. 코로나19도 초기에는 중국 우한시 수산물도매시장에서 거래된 야생동물에게서 이 바이러스가 유래된 것으로 생각했으나 정확하게 확인되지는 않았다.

코로나19에 감염된 사람은 2~14일의 잠복기를 거친 후 고열과 기침, 호흡곤란 등의 증상이 발생하고 폐렴과 유사한 증상을 보인다. 초기에는 인후통, 오한, 근육통 같은 목감기 증상을 보이지만 폐 기능이 저하되면서 기침, 가래, 고열 등이 나타난다. 더 진행되면 가래, 기침이 심해지고 숨을 쉴 때 가슴통증, 호흡곤란 등이 나타난다. 이것이 심해지면 폐포가 손상되어 호흡 부전으로 사망에 이르기도 한다. 하지만 최근 확진자 중 증상을 잘 느끼지 못하거나 증상이 나타나지 않은 사례도 발생하고 있다.

코로나19는 비말감염으로 전염된다. 비말감염은 감염자가 기침/재채기를 할 때 침 등의 작은 물방울(비말)에 바이러스/세균이 섞여 나와 타인에게 감염되는 것이다. 비말의 통상 이동거리는 2m로 알려져 있다. 눈의 경우 감염환자의 침 등이 눈에 직접 들어가거나 바이러스에 오염된 손으로 눈을 비비면 눈을 통해 전염될 수 있다. 이런 이유로 질병관리본부에서는 손씻기와 마스크 착용을 권하고 있다.

한국에서는 지난 1월 20일 한국을 방문한 중국인이 최초의 감염자로 확진된 이후 2월 17일까지 확진환자는 30명 수준에 머무르며 소강상태를 보였다. 그러나 2월 20일 대구/경북 지방을 중심으로 특정 종교 집단을 통해 감염자가 2000명 대로 급증하면서 상황이 급변했다. 마트에서는 마스크 품귀 현상이 일어나고 있으며 각 급 학교에서는 학사 일정이 조정되고 기업에서도 원격근무가 장려되는 등 코로나19에 대한 사회적 긴장이 더욱 고조되었다. 정부차원에서 중앙사고수습본부와 중앙방역대책본부를 마련하여 다양한 노력을 하고 있으나 코로나19의 확산세가 잦아들지는 아직 미지수다..
