The coronavirus (COVID-19) brought devastating effects around the world, with over 700,000 cases and over 33,000 deaths. Thankfully, more than 150,000 people have recovered after being infected and have been discharged from quarantine. Yet, the virus is far from dying down. The economy of countries has taken a severe blow, and countries are closing schools, restaurants, businesses, and public events.
Some people believe that artificial intelligence may help with handling the coronavirus crisis. Since the outbreak in Wuhan, China last December, over 2000 research papers have been published about the virus. The speed in which research has been conducted is impressive but it may be difficult to mine information from them.
The White House has recently announced an initiative in collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, AI2, Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, Microsoft Research, the National Library of Medicine, and Kaggle to allow access to the vast amount of data for AI researchers. Over 29,000 scientific articles will be available to data-mining. Machine learning can lend a huge hand in cross-referencing research papers, finding patterns in them, and provide insight into possible treatments and variances among patients. 10 top-priority questions about the virus have been posted on Kaggle, the data science and machine learning community owned by Google, to act as the basis of machine learning.
Some experts, however, say other issues require immediate attention, such as the shortage of test kits and supplies. The hope is that the application of AI and data science will speed up the uncovering the coronavirus and the panic spreading. The sooner the treatment is found, the better.
