Recently, the scale of the COVID- 19, which originated from Wuhan, China, has grown into a Pandemic. It raised resentment and anti-Chinese sentiment around the world. Furthermore, in some countries in Europe, there is racial discrimination against Asians. Racism is mainly fostered by hostile emotions or fears amongst groups. The main example is the intensification of the discrimination of the black people in the 1920s, background being economic depression. White people became anxious that black people might take away their jobs and the fear of it had degenerated into intensifying racism.

Many Asians who experienced discrimination, started to raise their voices through various social media. There was a case about a Chinese resident in Casola, Italy, being refused to enter a bar, only because of his race. He also posted that one Italian man in the bar who seemed to be in his 30s even hit him on his head using a glass cup. Moreover, in Lisbon, Portugal, Koreans who were on a package tour were subjected to abusive words from a Portuguese man, because he had mistaken them for Chinese tourists.

Some people posted discriminatory against Asians on their social media. On the 15th of March, 2020, an American man posted an unpleasant video along with the phrase “Do you think this is being racist?” on his Instagram account, drawing ire from viewers. In the video, a Black male had a phone on his hand recording and had a spray sanitizer on his other hand. He chased after a senior citizen who was Asian and sprayed the sanitizer on her. The old lady showed discomfort, repetitively shouting “no” to him. However, the man did not stop making fun of her and acted worse. The majority of people criticized the man, demanding to delete the video, but the man just responded that he was not being racist and is keeping the video on his post.

As racial segregation was becoming intensified due to COVID-19, the chief of the United Nation’s human rights department, Michelle Bachelet expressed her concerns about the situation in the UN Geneva conference. She also asked the United Nations member states to fight against the pandemic - associated racism.

The pandemic disease itself is frightening. However, the impact of the fear caused by the disease on society results in another terrible consequence. The resentment and fear of the disease should not be towards innocent citizens.

코로나 바이러스가 불러온 또 다른 재앙 - 인종차별

최근, 중국 우한에서 시작된 코로나 19 바이러스의 규모가 팬데믹으로 커지면서 중국에 대한 원망과 반중적 감정이 고조되고 있는 추세이다. 더불어, 유럽 각국에서는 반중적인 태도가 아시아인에 대한 차별로도 이어지고 있다. 인종차별은 주로 집단 간의 적대적인 감정이나 두려움에서 시작된다. 예를 들어 노예해방 이후 미국의 남부지역에서 1920년도에 흑인에 대한 인종차별이 고조된 적이 있었는데, 그 배경으로는 미국의 경제적인 어려움이 있었다. 백인들은 흑인들이 자신들의 일자리를 모조리 빼앗아갈까봐 무척 불안해 하였고 그 두려움이 결국 흑인들에 대한 인종차별로 변질된 것이다.

아시아인들은 각종 커뮤니티를 통해 자신이 당했던 인종차별 사례들을 하나 둘 올리기 시작했다.
유럽의 이탈리아에 거주하는 한 중국인은 자신이 중국인이라는 이유만으로 이탈리아 카솔라에 위치한 한 주점에서 거부를 당했고 그 당시 주점에 있던 30대 이탈리아 국적의 남성은 급기야 자신의 머리를 유리잔으로 때렸다고 주장했다. 또한 포르투갈 리스본에서는 길을 가던 한국인 여행객이 포르투갈 남성들에게 중국인으로 오인받아 욕설을 듣는 등의 낭패를 봤다고 한다.
몇몇 서양인들은 자신의 개인 SNS에 직접 인종차별적인 태도를 보이는 듯한 게시물을 올리기도 했다. 지난 15일, 한 흑인남성은 “ 이게 인종차별이라고 생각하냐?” 라는 문구와 함께 인종차별적인 태도가 담긴 영상을 개인의 인스타그램에 게시해 누리꾼들의 분노를 자아냈다. 영상 속 장소는 마이애미로, 화제가 된 영상 속에는 본인이 직접 한국인 할머니에게 손소독제를 뿌리며 조롱하는 모습이 담겨 있었다. 영상 속 할머니는 “no” 라고 하며 거부의사를 확실히  밝혔지만 해당 남성은 조롱을 멈추지 않았으며 할머니의 모습은 모자이크 처리 없이 그대로 게시되었다.
이에 대다수의 사람들은 부끄럽지도 않냐며 해당 남성을 비판하였고 영상을 삭제하라고 요구하였지만 흑인 남성은 인종차별주의자가 아니라고 해명만 할 뿐 영상을 내리지 않고 있다.

이렇게 코로나로 인해 아시아인들에 대한 인종차별이 극심해지자, 유엔 인권 최고대표인 미첼 바첼레트는 제네바 유엔 사무국에서 열린 인권이사회에서 코로나 바이러스로 촉발된 아시안 인종차별에 대한 우려를 표했다. 그리고 그녀는 유엔 회원국들이  코로나 바이러스와 관련된 인종차별과 맞서 싸워줄 것을 요구했다. 

전염병은 그 자체로도 무섭지만 전염병에 대한 두려움이 사회에 주는 영향은 또 다른 무시무시한 결과를 초래한다. 전염병에 대한 원망과 두려움의 화살이 애꿎은 시민들에게 돌려지지 않아야 한다.
