No One Should Be Left Alone
±è¿¹Àº °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2020.04.12 18:34

Amidst the socio-political and economic chaos of COVID-19, many have become anxious and depressed due to strict social distancing and home quarantine. However, elderly people living alone have suffered the worst from these changes.

South Korea became a graying society in 2017 when the elderly population exceeded 14% of the whole population. Due to various causes, such as the rapid expansion of nuclear families, an aging population, and the occasional family conflict, the number of seniors living alone has skyrocketed, exceeding 1.38 million in 2017. 44% of single-person households in Korea belong to someone age 60 or older, and over 61.8% of them live in poverty. Those who are abandoned by their families are vulnerable to illnesses and often die alone. Every year, about 300 seniors die in solitude in this country. Shockingly, South Korea has the highest annual senior suicide rate among OECD countries, at 72 deaths per 100,000 people.

A reporter mentioned that the most heartbreaking thing that happens in life is not poverty, failure, or job loss, but having to face the end of one’s life alone. They were once the members of society who have devoted themselves to their home and society; however, they have become socially underprivileged and buried by familial and social indifference. Having neither jobs nor caregivers, they are prone to poverty, depression, loneliness, and health issues.

In light of this pressing issue, the government has implemented various economic policies to help senior citizens, including a national basic living security system, a medical insurance system, and a pension, as well as encouraging numerous NGOs and companies to donate to senior-focused charities. Nonetheless, existing social blind spots still leave us with hundreds of thousands of elderly people living alone. Due to the financial limits of government policy, we must devote our attention and support to this cause. Having no one to communicate and share happiness with, they may feel isolated every moment. They are not simply strangers but people who had once been the heads of their family and led our society. In a society where people are less and less involved with their parents, occasional family gatherings or even short phone calls can help maintain active relationships between people and their aging parents.
