Corona virus disease 19(COVID-19, hereafter), which came suddenly in December 2019, is now suffering a great deal globally.

A large number of casualties have been reported and vaccines have yet to be developed and are still ongoing. The COVID-19 virus is hurting us not only in these damages but also in other areas. Economic damage is at its core.

First of all, in South Korea, the government's policy on the COVID-19 virus, "Social Distancing," is causing huge losses to many self-employed people and businesses. Heavy drop in customers and closure of factories operating overseas, especially in China, are the main reasons. There is also a series of economic damage worldwide. According to an economic analysis forecast model released by Oxford Economics, an economic research institute affiliated with Oxford University in the U.K., on the 19th (local time), the global economic growth rate is expected to decrease by about 1.3% due to the spread of Corona virus.

It is expected to leave economic losses amounting to $1.1 trillion in the world. Also, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the global economy has been growing at its slowest pace since 2009 when the U.S. economic crisis hit the country.
 

In November last year, the OECD expected an economic growth rate of 2.9 percent in 2020, but recently lowered that figure to 2.4 percent. They also predicted that the economic growth rate could fall to 1.5 percent this year if the COVID-19 crisis prolongs and gets worse as factories stop production and workers are staying at their homes to avoid virus infections.
 
Japan has suffered the most damage from the COVID-19. 2020 was the year the world festival, Summer Olympics are supposed to be held. The Olympics, originally scheduled to start on July 24 and end on August 9, have been postponed by one year to July 23, 2021. The Olympics are the event that is expected to be enjoyed all over the world under the name of a “global festival,” but on the other side, it is considered to be a “big dark shadow of money.” There are not one or two countries that suffer greatly from failing to pay off all their debts after the Olympics.

However, Japan is expected to suffer more financial damage as it was delayed by a year even before the Olympics began. For example, with the "2020 Tokyo Olympics" logo already supplied to the market, it is a problem to be solved because it became the 2021 Olympics. Furthermore, apartment and stadium management in the athletes' village are expected to be a major drag. It was the Abe administration, which dreamed of reviving the Japanese economy based on the Tokyo Olympics, but the dream ended in an instant.

코로나가 가지고 온 경제적 영향

 2019년 12월 갑작스럽게 찾아온 코로나19 바이러스로 인해 현재 국제적으로 크게 피해를 보고 있다. 많은 수의 사상자가 나왔고 아직까지 백신이 개발되지 않아 계속 진행 중에 있다.

그러나 이 코로나19 바이러스는 이런 피해뿐만 아니라 다른 영역에서도 우리에게 피해를 주고 있다. 경제적인 피해가 그 핵심이다. 우선 대한민국에서는 코로나19 바이러스에 대한 정부의 정책인 ‘사회적 거리 두기’가 많은 자영업자들과 기업에 막대한 손실을 안겨주고 있다.

극심한 손님 감소와 해외, 특히 중국에 진출해 있는 공장 폐쇄가 주요 원인이다. 세계적으로도 많은 경제적 피해가 잇따르고 있다. 영국 옥스퍼드대학 산하 경제연구기관 '옥스퍼드 이코노믹스'가 19일(현지시간) 발표한 경제분석예측 모델에 따르면, 신종 코로나 확산으로 인해 세계 경제성장률이 약 1.3% 감소할 전망이다.

이는 1조1000억 달러에 달하는 경제적 손실을 세계에 남길 것으로 분석된다. 또한, 경제협력개발기구(OECD)에 따르면 코로나19으로 미국의 경제위기가 있었던 2009년 이래 세계 경제가 가장 느린 성장세를 보이고 있다.
 
지난해 11월 OECD는 2020년 경제성장률을 2.9%로 예상했지만 최근 2.4%로 그 수치를 낮췄다. 그러면서 공장이 생산을 중단하고 근로자들이 바이러스 감염을 피하기 위해 자택에 머물고 있어 코로나19 사태가 장기화하고 더 심해질 경우 올해 경제성장률은 1.5%까지 떨어질 수 있다고 내다봤다.

일본 역시 이 코로나19 바이러스로 인해 가장 큰 피해를 봤다고 볼 수 있다. 2020년은 원래 세계적인 축제 하계 올림픽이 열리는 해이다. 7월24일을 시작으로 8월9일에 끝날 예정이었던 이 올림픽이 2021년 7월 23일로 1년 연기된 것이다.

올림픽은 세계적인 축제라는 이름에 걸맞게 전세계적으로 기대되고 모두가 즐길 수 있는 행사이지만 그 이면에는 ‘돈’이라는 큰 어두운 그림자가 있다. 올림픽 이후 빚을 다 갚지 못해 큰 어려움을 겪는 나라가 한 두 곳이 아니다. 하지만 일본은 올림픽이 시작하기도 전에 1년 연기가 되었기 때문에 더 많은 재정적 피해가 있을 거라 예측된다.

예를 들어, ‘2020도쿄올림픽’이라는 로고로 이미 많은 상품들이 시장에 공급된 상황에서 2021년 올림픽이 되었기 때문에 해결해야 할 문제이다. 더 나아가, 선수촌 아파트와 경기장 관리 등이 크게 발목을 잡을 것이라고 예상된다. 도쿄올림픽을 바탕으로 일본 경제 부흥을 꿈꾼 아베 정부였지만 그 꿈은 한 순간에 끝이 난 것이 아닐까 싶다.
