Nine years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident happened on 11th March 2011 in Japan. It was an accident that started with a tsunami and the following Tohoku earthquake. Even though the active reactors shut down the fission reaction automatically, the tsunami overwhelmed into the emergency generators. The resulting damage caused to cool down the reactors. This caused the enormous hydrogen-air explosion to occur, and three nuclear reactors melted down, and radioactive materials were released, which killed approximately 19000 people.

At the reactor site, the cleanup work is being proceeded. Contaminated buildings have been cleared and radiation decreased. The cleanup recently reached the point in which workers began removing nuclear fuel rods for disposal. However, the pollution due to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident is still ongoing. It will probably take decades to completely recover the city.

Currently, thousands of people are living in temporary housing provided by the government. Even though some of the residents returned to nearby villages, approximately 100,000 former citizens of Fukushima are not able to come back yet. Moreover, groundwater flowed through contaminated places. Therefore, groundwater was polluted by radioactive materials which caused the basements of the surrounding houses poisonous. Most of the Environmentalists are worried about the radioactive water flowing to the sea which will cause water pollution and the population of fish being killed. Nuclear fuel is also very hazardous, so when workers become exposed to radiation, they must stop working.

To clean up all those pollution and to recover everything, it will take a long time and will cost more than 400 billion dollars. One extreme accident seriously affected the opposite side of Japan. Even though environments are damaged, due to the ‘Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident’, people should work hard to bring back the damaged environment.

 
9년전, 후쿠시마 원전 사고 아직도 영향을 주다

2011년 3월 11일 일본에서 후쿠시마 원전 사고가 발생한 지 9년이 지났다. 쓰나미와 뒤따른 도호쿠 지진으로 시작된 에너지 사고였다. 원자로가 자동적으로 핵분열 반응을 정지시켰음에도 불구하고 압도적으로 강한 쓰나미는 비상발전기를 정지시켰다. 이로 인해 원자로가 냉각되면서 엄청난 수소공기 폭발이 일어났다. 원자로가 녹아내렸고 방사능 물질이 방출되어 약 1만9000명의 사망자가 발생하며 환경에도 심각한 영향을 끼쳤다.

원자로 현장에서 오염된 건물들을 폐쇄하며 방사능 수치를 줄이는 등 정화작업이 진행됐다. 최근 작업에서는 핵연료봉을 재처리하기도 했다. 재처리를 통해 방사성 독성은 무려 1/1000로 줄어들기까지 한다. 그러나 후쿠시마 제 1 원자력 발전 사고로 인한 오염은 여전히 진행 중이고 도시를 완벽하게 복구하는 데는 아마도 수십 년이 걸릴 것이다.

현재, 수천 명의 후쿠시마 주민들이 일본 정부에서 제공해준 임시 주택에서 살고 있다. 주민 일부는 인근 마을로 돌아갔지만 약 10만여 명은 아직 돌아가지 못하고 있다. 게다가 오염된 장소를 통해 흐르는 지하수 때문에 주변 주택의 지하도가 방사성 물질에 의해 오염되면서 주민들의 건강에 문제가 생기기도 한다. 또, 대부분의 환경보호론자들은 방사능 오염수가 바다로 흘러들어가면 생기는 바다 생태계 파괴에 우려하고 있다. 이렇게 독성 성분을 가지고 있는 핵연료는 사람들에게 매우 위험하기 때문에 작업자들이 현장 주변에서 작업을 하다 방사선에 노출되면 절대로 작업을 계속해서는 안 된다.

모든 오염물질들을 정리하고 모든 것을 복구하기 위해서는 오랜 시간이 걸리고 4천억 달러 이상의 비용이 들 것이다. 한 번의 극단적인 사고로 아직도 일본 반대편에 있는 나라에서도 방사능이 발견되고 있다. 우리는 앞으로 꾸준히 '후쿠시마 다이이치 원전 사고'로 인해 파괴된 환경을 되살리는 데 힘써야 한다.
