Art Director, Another "Storyteller"Art Directing in Film and Music Industry

Mrs. and Mr. Wasco, the Art Director and Production Designer of the movie “La La Land (2016)”, which had won the Academy Award for Best Production Design in 2017, said that their job as an Art Director is to “Create a quiet background world that helps and tells what the character is about.”

Art Director exists in various fields that need creativity like visual media such as movies, dramas, advertisements, stage performances, etc. Since Art directors exist in diverse types of businesses, what they specifically do could be different from one another.

Art directing in film production requires creativity and technical skills in more various areas like photography, graphic design, and more. Art directors first read the scenario and discuss with the film director, and then they realize the images of what the film director intended by using images, sketches, or three-dimensional pictures. They direct visual effects including the materialization of a specific period or scene, a composition of color or environment of the play. Concretely, they plan and supervise the whole direction and detailed concept of the film’s production and artistic design, such as set decorating, deciding shooting locations, lighting, costumes, and props. When it comes to filmmaking, art directors perform an essential role as another storyteller by using images and artistic designs.

Art directing takes up a big part in today’s music industry, especially K-pop. For example, Hee-jin Min, the former Creative Director and Graphic Designer of SM Entertainment, has the title of “the leader who established the idea of visual director and planner in K-pop”. She has contributed to raising the status of K-pop in the world's music industry. After graduating from Seoul Women’s University with a diploma in visual design, she had joined SM Entertainment in 2002. She directed visual and the general concept of the group and albums of artists including Girls’ Generation, SHINee, Exo, and Red Velvet.

As an Art Director working in the K-pop music industry, Hee-jin Min explains her job does a ‘work that materializes a kind of a visual fantasy by visually realizing a particular musical image’. These art directors perform as a manager, a visual worker, and a marketer altogether. They establish a particular image of the artist through directing the album artwork, costume, planning, and production of the music video and directing and making a teaser promotion in advance. She also emphasized that the fundamental role of an Art Director is a ‘storyteller’. 

Hee-jin Min has left an incisive point of view about the future of the art directing in the music industry with a bit of advice for art directors of the younger generation that you should always pursue newness and that it’s important to maintain sincerity and will, despite a situation where the music and entertainment market is oversaturated and new topics and discourses are being continuously presented.

ÀÌ·¯ÇÑ ¾ÆÆ® µð·ºÅÍ´Â ¿µÈ­, µå¶ó¸¶, ±¤°í¿Í °°Àº ¿µ»ó ¹Ìµð¾î, ¿ÀÆä¶ó, ¹ÂÁöÄÃ, ¹ß·¹, ¿¬±Ø µîÀÇ °ø¿¬ ¹«´ë, Æ÷Åä±×·¡ÇÇ, ´ëÁßÀ½¾Ç½ÃÀå µî ´Ù¾çÇÑ ºÐ¾ß¿Í ¾÷Á¾¿¡ Á¸ÀçÇÏ°í ÀÖÀ¸¸ç, ºÐ¾ß°¡ ´Ù¾çÇÑ ¸¸Å­ ¾÷Á¾°ú ºÐ¾ß¸¶´Ù ÇÏ´Â ÀÏ°ú ±× ¹üÀ§°¡ ¸ðµÎ ´Ù¸£´Ù.

¿µÈ­ »ê¾÷¿¡¼­ÀÇ ¾ÆÆ® µð·ºÆÃÀº ¿µ»ó, µðÀÚÀÎ, ±×·¡ÇÈ µî º¸´Ù ´Ù¾çÇÑ ºÐ¾ß¿¡¼­ÀÇ Ã¢ÀǷ°ú ±â¼úÀûÀÎ ´É·ÂÀ» ÇÊ¿ä·Î ÇÑ´Ù. ¾ÆÆ® µð·ºÅÍ´Â ½Ã³ª¸®¿À¸¦ ÀÐ°í °¨µ¶°ú »óÀÇ °úÁ¤À» °ÅÄ£ ÈÄ »çÁø, ±×¸², °ø°£Åõ½Ãµµ µîÀ» ÀÌ¿ëÇÏ¿© °¨µ¶ÀÌ ¿øÇÏ´Â ¹æÇâ°ú Àǵµ¿¡ ¸Â°Ô ¿µÈ­ À̹ÌÁö¸¦ ±¸ÇöÇÏ´Â ÀÏÀ» ÇÑ´Ù.
