Netflix’s original series <Extracurricular>, which was released late last month, is drawing keen attention. Shortly after its release, it was ranked No. 1 on South Korea’s Netflix list by word of mouth. At the same time, <Extracurricular> has created more controversy than any other work. Ji-soo, an 18-year-old high school student, is a pimp in prostitution. In the wake of the Nth room case, this series is controversial in the ever-increasing trend of not giving a reason to criminals. However, <Extracurricular> has a much more complicated story than that. This series draws so much response from people because it represents Korea’s social severe issues. <Extracurricular> depicts a process in which high school students who are caught in a crime of prostitution pay the price to make money. Describing the grim reality of Korean teenagers, it also asks the audience how to solve the problem. Actor Yoon-soo, who played Ki-tae in <Extracurricular>, said, “It was particularly impressive that the characters in work seemed insensitive to teenage crimes. So I felt it could be a wake-up call,” he said.

Ji-soo, who has excellent academic performance but does not get along with his classmates, is a boy who is abandoned by his parents and has to live on his own. To live a healthy life, Ji-soo creates a conditioned dating app to connect people and provide security services and earn money in return. Including the prostitutes registered in his app is Min-hee, a student of the same class. Gyu-ri, a classmate who accidentally realized Ji-soo’s secret, threatened him and became a part of the crime.

They continue to commit prostitution for different purposes. Gyu-ri regards it as the only way out of her elite parents pressing her. Min-hee uses the sex trade to make money because the only way to satisfy her boyfriend Ki-tae was money. Ji-soo collects money to live like an ordinary person to survive. However, <Extracurricular> denies giving the justification of crime and emphasizes that these purposes are based on their own choices and responsibilities.

<Extracurricular> is aimed at teenagers to inform the seriousness of their involvement in prostitution and other crimes. That is why the series refuses to specify the cause of the crime. The possibility of choosing the wrong path because of poor conditions is dismissed when rich and famous Gyu-ri joined the crime. Director Jin-min Kim said, “You should not make excuses for the crime. If the main characters portray society cynically and derisively, they will be given some justification, and I wanted to stop directing such cynical sentiments.” <Extracurricular> is quite shocking because it depicts the process of the main characters being destroyed by the wrong personal choice. Actor Da-bin, who plays Min-hee in <Extracurricular>, said, “I hope this drama will become a medium for people to feel closer to the social problems surrounding teenagers.”

<인간수업> 대한민국 청소년 사회 문제의 현실

지난 달 말에 공개된 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 <인간수업>이 큰 주목을 받고 있다. 공개된 직후 입소문을 타고 한국 넷플릭스 순위 1위에 올랐다. 동시에 <인간수업>은 그 어떤 작품보다도 많은 논란을 일으켰다. 18살 고등학생인 지수가 성매매의 포주라는 설정은 굉장히 예민하다. N번방 사건 이후 범죄자에게 서사를 부여하지 말자는 의견이 갈수록 높아지고 있는 추세에 이 시리즈는 논란의 여지가 있다. 하지만, <인간수업>은 그보다 훨씬 복잡한 이야기를 담고 있다. 이 시리즈가 이토록 사람들의 뜨거운 관심과 반응을 얻는 데에는 단순히 재미를 떠나 한국의 심각한 사회적 이슈를 잘 나타내기 때문이다. <인간수업>은 돈을 벌기 위해서 성매매라는 범죄의 길에 빠진 고등학생들이 대가를 치르는 과정을 그린다. 한국 청소년의 암울한 현실을 묘사하는 동시에 이 문제를 어떻게 해결해야 할지에 대해 관객들에게 질문을 던진다. <인간수업>에서 기태 역을 맡은 남윤수 배우는 “작품 속 등장인물들이 10대 범죄에 무감해 보인다는 점이 특히 인상적이었다. 그래서 이 작품이 경각심을 줄 수 있겠다고 느꼈다” 라고 말했다.

학업 성취도가 우수하지만 반 아이들과 어울리지 못하는 지수는 부모님에게 모두 버림 받고 혼자 힘으로 살아가야만 하는 소년이다. 평범하게 살기 위해 지수는 조건 만남 알선 앱을 만들어 사람들을 연결시켜주고 경호 서비스를 제공해주며 그 댓가로 돈을 번다. 그의 앱에 등록된 성매매 여성 중에는 같은 반 학생인 민희도 포함돼 있다. 우연히 지수의 비밀을 알게 된 같은 반 학생 규리는 지수를 협박해 범죄에 가담하게 된다.

그들은 각자 다른 목적을 가지고 성매매 범죄를 지속한다. 규리는 이 일을 자신을 압박하는 엘리트 부모님으로부터 벗어나는 유일한 탈출구하고 여긴다. 민희는 남자친구인 기태를 만족시키기 위해서 성매매를 돈을 벌기 위한 수단으로 이용한다. 지수는 평범한 사람처럼 살기 위해 돈을 모은다. 하지만, <인간수업>은 이러한 목적들이 범죄의 서사를 부여하는 것을 부정하고, 본인 스스로의 선택과 책임에 따른 것이라는 것을 강조한다.

<인간수업>은 청소년들이 성매매 등의 범죄에 가담하는 심각성을 알리는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 이 시리즈는 범죄의 원인을 특정하는 것을 거부한다. 지수가 가난해서 혹은 열약한 환경 때문에 잘못된 길을 선택한다는 여지는 부자이자 인기가 많은 규리가 같이 범죄에 가담하면서 기각된다. 김진민 감독은 “범죄에 핑계를 대면 안된다. 주인공들이 사회를 냉소적으로 보고 비웃는 식으로 그려내면 이들에게 어떤 정당성을 부여하게 되는데 그런 냉소적인 정서를 잡아내는 건 이제 그만 연출하고 싶었다” 라고 말했다. <인간수업>은 잘못된 개인의 선택으로 인해 주인공들이 파멸해가는 과정이 세심하게 묘사되어 적잖은 충격을 안긴다. <인간수업>에서 민희 역을 맡은 정다빈 배우는 “이 드라마가 사람들이 10대를 둘러싼 사회문제를 더 가깝게 체감할 수 있는 하나의 매개체가 되었으면 좋겠다” 라고 말했다.
