World Health Organization’s Shortcomings
황채린 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2020.05.25 14:12

The WHO, World Health Organization, is a specialized agency that is a part of the United Nations. The purpose of the WHO is to maintain and promote good public health, and they are often expected to act as leaders in times of a health crisis.

However, the WHO has recently been criticized for its mishandling of the COVID crisis. Most of the criticism is aimed at their controversial general director, Tedrso, whose political bias towards China has compromised his ability to make sound choices. Even before his ascension as general director, Tedro was seen as very incompetent for covering up the Cholera outbreak in his home country of Ethiopia during his tenure as the nation’s health minister.

Furthermore, many believe the only reason why Tedro was picked as the general director was due to the backing of China’s government who acts as a major benefactor to the WHO. Tedros’s ties with China have blunted the effectiveness of the WHO as they have stood ideally by while COVID 19 wreaked havoc throughout the world. For example, the WHO has stood by many of China’s erroneous claims, such as COVID 19 being unable to spread from human contact, which was eventually disproven.

Additionally, the WHO has praised China for its transparency despite its censoring of physicians, misreporting of confirmed cases. By constantly taking sides with the Chinese government, the WHO caused much confusion and delay in the medical community and wasted much needed time that could have been spent saving people’s lives. At desperate times like this, people are relying on organizations such as the WHO for help.

Therefore, these organizations should not be involving themselves in politics, but they should be transparent, and their main concern should be fighting against the virus.
