Stem cells are cells that can differentiate into body tissues. For example, stem cells regenerate the wounded skin within themselves. The liver and skin are representative organs, including stem cells, but not all organs have stem cells.

For example, because the spinal cord or brain nerves do not have stem cells, spinal cord injuries caused by Alzheimer's or traffic accidents can't be repaired by themselves and may cause discomfort in daily living due to serious illness or serious damage. 환자들에게 희망을 주는 줄기 세포

줄기세포는 신체 조직으로 분화할 수 있는 세포를 말한다. 예를 들어 상처가 난 피부가 스스로 재생되는 것도 줄기세포 때문이다. 간과 피부가 대표적으로 줄기세포를 포함한 장기이지만, 모든 장기가 줄기세포를 가지고 있지는 않는다.

예를 들어 척수나 뇌신경은 줄기세포가 없기 때문에 알츠하이머나 교통사고로 인한 척추 손상으로 인한 척수 손상은 스스로 고쳐지지 못하고 병을 갖게되거나 또는 심각한 손상으로 인해 일상생활에 불편함을 겪을 수도 있게 된다. 줄기세포를 가지고 있지 않아 회복이 불가능한 병이나 손상을 고치기 위해 만들어진 것이 줄기세포 치료법이다.

대표적인 사례로는 2009년 화학약품으로 인한 각막손상을 줄기세포 치료법을 사용하여 회복한 사례이다. 또한 관절염과 같은 질환을 줄기세포로 치료한 사례도 매우 많다. 이처럼 줄기세포를 사용하면 자연적으로가 아닌 인위적으로 자신이 가지고 있는 병을 치료할 수 있다.

현재 세계의 심각한 문제인 코로나 바이러스의 치료법 또한 줄기세포의 이러한 특징을 사용하여 개발하기 위해 세계 몇몇 개 국가의 연구원들이 코로나 바이러스의 형태를 연구하고 있다. 코로나 바이러스 치료법이 현재 밝혀지지 않은 시점에서 줄기세포를 이용한 치료법은 희망을 주고 있다. 이미 줄기세포를 이용한 코로나 바이러스 치료 결과가 일반 치료법에 비하면 더 빠른 시간 안에 치료할 수 있다는 결과는 세계의 줄기세포를 이용한 치료법 연구에 희망을 주고 있다.
