Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built during the late Joseon Dynasty in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty, built the fortress by moving his father's tomb, who was unjustly killed, to Hwahwa. Then he moved the people who lived near it down to Mt. Paldal in Suwon. King Jeongjo thought that politics should be done in a new area, not in Hanyang, to resolve partisan strife among his servants and strengthen the royal authority. Therefore, King Jeongjo wanted to build a fortress city in Suwon with all the knowledge and skills of the time. Like this, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built from the beginning so that the people can live in abundance despite foreign invasions.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is a huge castle with a circumference of 5,744 meters and a height of 6 meters, designed by Jeong Yak-Yong, a renowned scholar of the time. Jeong Yak-Yong completed the huge castle in two years by utilizing state-of-the-art machines such as Geojunggi, Hwalcha, and Nokro. The castle is a new type not seen in China and Japan before and has excellent defensive functions as it features a mountain fortress that has come down to the flatland around the mountain. Besides, the outer part of the castle was built using bricks that were widely used in the West, and the inner side was made by using natural features to raise soil. This is a fortification that embodies the strengths of the East and the West.

The sudden death of King Jeongjo prevented him from moving the capital to Suwon Hwaseong. Since then, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress has been damaged in large part through the Japanese invasion and the Korean War, but the actual architectural records of the castle have remained, allowing it to be restored to its current state. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 in recognition of its excellence in that it was an ideal political, economic and social city conceived by scholars at the time of King Jeongjo's reign, and that all records on the actual construction of the castle remain in detail, as well as the scientific and artistic beauty of the use of modern devices.

In Suwon, the "Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival" is held every October to honor the historical significance of Hwaseong Fortress, a product of King Jeongjo's filial piety and technological development of the time. Moonlight Jeongdam, which was recently shut down due to the Corona19, is also back in operation. Various attractions and experiences are available at Munhwa Street, an alley next to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, and bike taxis are also available. In addition, visitors can tour major attractions in Hwaseong, Suwon, by riding the first car used by Emperor Sunjong of the Korean Empire and the "Hwasong Eocha" made of motifs for the kilns of Joseon kings. 도심 속의 아름다운 역사문화 여행지, 수원 화성

수원화성은 경기도 수원에 있는 조선후기에 축조된 성이다. 조선의 22대 왕 정조는 뒤주 속에서 억울한 죽음을 당한 아버지의 능을 화산으로 이전하고 그 부근에 살던 백성들을 수원의 팔달산 아래로 옮기면서 이 성을 쌓았다. 정조는 신하들의 당파싸움을 해결하고 왕권을 강화하기 위해 한양이 아니라 새로운 곳에서 정치를 해야 한다고 생각했다. 따라서 정조는 당대의 모든 지식과 기술을 동원해 수원에 성곽도시를 세우고자 했다. 이처럼 수원화성은 외적의 침입에도 끄떡없고 백성들이 풍요롭게 잘 살 수 있도록 처음부터 계획해 지어진 성이다.

수원화성은 성곽 둘레가 5744미터, 높이 6미터에 이르는 거대한 성으로, 당대의 유명한 실학자인 정약용에 의해 설계되었다. 정약용은 당시 최첨단 기계인 거중기, 활차, 녹로 등을 활용해 이 거대한 성을 2년 만에 완성했다. 이 성은 그 이전까지 중국과 일본에서 볼 수 없었던 새로운 형태로, 산을 둘러 평지까지 내려온 산성의 모습을 띄고 있어 방어적 기능이 매우 뛰어나다. 또한 서양에서 많이 쓰는 벽돌을 사용해 성의 외측을 쌓고 내측은 자연의 지세를 이용해 흙을 돋우어 만들었는데 이는 동서양의 장점을 모두 살린 축성술이다.

정조의 갑작스러운 죽음으로 화성 천도는 이루어지지 못했다. 이후 수원화성은 일제침략기와 6.25전쟁을 거치며 상당부분 훼손되었지만 성의 실제 건축 기록이 남아 있어 다시 현재와 같은 모습으로 복구할 수 있었다. 수원화성은 정조와 당시 실학자들이 구상한 이상적인 정치, 경제, 사회적 도시의 구현이었다는 점과 성의 실제 건축에 관한 모든 기록이 상세하게 남아 있다는 점, 그리고 근대적 기기 활용의 과학성과 예술적인 아름다움까지 두루 갖추었다는 점에서 세계적으로 그 우수성을 인정받아 1997년 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재되었다.

수원에서는 정조의 효심과 당대 기술 발전의 산물인 화성 축성의 역사적 의미를 기리고자 매년 10월 ‘수원화성문화제’가 열린다. 최근에는 코로나19로 중단되었던 화성행궁 야간개장인 ‘달빛정담 情談’도 다시 운영을 시작했다. 화성행궁 옆 골목인 문화거리에서는 다양한 볼거리와 체험이 가능하며 자전거 택시도 이용이 가능하다. 또한 대한제국 순종황제가 타던 최초의 자동차와 조선 왕들의 가마를 모티프로 만든 ‘화성어차’를 타면 수원 화성의 주요 명소를 관광할 수 있다. 코로나19로 지친 마음을 달래기 위해 도심 속 아름다운 역사문화 여행지인 수원화성으로 나들이를 떠나보는 건 어떨까?
