The movie <Bombshell>, released on the 8th, is receiving a heated response. The movie attracted 100,000 viewers in just six days after its release, despite the lack of people heading to the theater due to the coronavirus.

The movie <Bombshell> is based on a real-life case in July 2016 when Fox News former anchor Gretchen Carlson accused former chairman Roger Ailes of sexual violence.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly(Charlize Theron) becomes the center of attention by engaging in a war of words with Trump at a debate on the presidential candidate and is under various threats and pressure from the media.

Megyn Kelly's fellow anchor, Gretchen Carlson(Nicole Kidman), sues Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes(John Lithgow) for sexual assault after being unfairly fired from the company. Megyn as well as Kayla Pospisil(Margot Robbie), who joined Fox with ambition, are shocked.

The fight, which seemed unlikely to win, is a complete reversal of the situation with the courageous additional testimony of more than 20 colleagues. In the end, Roger Ailes admits his guilt and steps down in disgrace.

From Gretchen Carlson(Nicole Kidman) who bravely sued Roger Ailes for sexual harassment, Megyn Kelly(Charlize Theron) who was in conflict with the situation where she has to bet everything she has built up to speak out, and Kayla Pospisil(Margot Robbie) who directly showed that sexual violence continues in the workplace, the audience deeply sympathized with the story of the three main characters.

Besides, the movie <Bombshell> shows how sexual violence takes place in the workplace. Furthermore, Kayla’s line "Sexual harassment in the workplace is like this. I'm constantly asking myself. What did I do? What did I say? What did I wear?" effectively embodies the problems that are happening behind people’s eyes.

The message the film throws into society by dealing with real events is clear. It warns of the seriousness of sexual violence at work by a hierarchy that occurs frequently in society. I hope that a better society will be formed by taking lessons from the last part of the movie, "This is the beginning."

'밤쉘: 세상을 바꾼 폭탄선언', 사회를 향한 강렬한 메시지

8일에 개봉한 영화 '밤쉘: 세상을 바꾼 폭탄선언'의 반응이 뜨겁다. 코로나로 인해 극장으로 향하는 사람들의 발걸음이 끊긴 와중에도 개봉 6일 만에 10만 관객을 동원했다.

'밤쉘: 세상을 바꾼 폭탄선언'은 2016년 7월 폭스뉴스 전 앵커 그레천 칼슨이 로저 에일스 전 회장의 권력형 성폭력을 고발한 실제 사건을 바탕으로 한 영화이다.

폭스뉴스의 간판 앵커 메긴 켈리(샤를리즈 테론)는 대선후보 토론회에서 트럼프와 설전을 벌임으로써 화제의 중심이 되고, 언론사로부터 여러 위협과 압박을 받는다.

메긴 켈리의 동료 앵커인 그레천 칼슨(니콜 키드먼)은 회사에서 억울하게 해고당한 후 폭스뉴스 회장 로저 에일스(존 리스고)를 성폭력으로 고소하고, 메긴은 물론 폭스에 야망을 가지고 새로 입사한 케일라 포스피실(마고 로비) 역시 충격을 받는다.

이길 가능성이 희박해 보였던 이 싸움은 20명 이상의 동료들의 용기 있는 추가 증언으로 상황이 완전히 뒤바뀐다. 결국 로저 에일리 회장은 자신의 죄를 인정하고 불명예스럽게 자리에서 물러난다.

최초로 용기 있게 폭스뉴스 회장을 성희롱으로 고소한 그레천 칼슨(니콜 키드먼), 목소리를 내기 위해 자신이 쌓아 온 모든 것을 걸어야만 하는 상황에 갈등에 빠지는 메긴 켈리(샤를리즈 테론), 그리고 직장 내 성폭력은 계속되고 있음을 직접적으로 보여주는 신입 케일라 포스피실(마고 로비)까지, 관객들은 세 주인공의 부당한 현실에 맞서는 이야기에 깊이 공감했다.

이뿐만 아니라 영화 '밤쉘: 세상을 바꾼 폭탄선언'은 직장 내에서의 성폭력이 어떻게 이뤄지는지 보여준다. 또한, "직장 내 성희롱은 이런 겁니다. 끊임없이 자문하죠. 내가 뭘 했지? 내가 무슨 말을 했지? 내가 뭘 입었더라?" 라는 케일라의 대사는 이 같은 피해를 당했음에도 스스로에게 자문하는 모습을 통해 여전히 뒤에서 일어나고 있을 현 사회의 문제점을 잘 담아내고 있다.

이 영화가 실제 사건을 다룸으로써 사회에 던지는 메시지는 분명하다. 실제로 사회에서 빈번히 발생하고 있는 위계에 의한 직장 내 성폭력의 심각성에 대해 경고한다. 영화 마지막에 나오는 “지금부터 시작이다"라는 말을 메시지로 삼아 이 영화를 시발점으로 더 나은 사회가 만들어지기를 희망한다.
