The COVID-19 Crisis and the Outlook of Airline Industry
ÀÌ»ó¿ø °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2020.07.23 20:43

The domestic airline industry, which has faced the worst crisis in history with the current COVID-19 situation, is not finding a breakthrough. It is difficult to expect earnings to recover in the second half of this year, and the M&A, which is the biggest concern of the airline industry, is now facing a crisis that would collapse.

According to research data from the Hana Bank Financial Management Research Institute in May, the sectors that suffered the most from this COVID-19 situation were identified as duty-free shops and travel agencies. The main reason for this result is that the number of passengers visiting the airport has drastically decreased due to the COVID-19 crisis. Due to the ban on entry to many countries including neighboring China and the avoidance of travelers from traveling abroad, the number of airport users has dropped to 10% normal times. As a result, airlines that mainly operate international routes are hit directly.

In the midst of the overall crisis in the airline industry, the M&A deal of Eastar Airlines by Jeju Air, which is currently ranked third in the international passenger market in Korea, revealed. This is the first case of M&A between airlines in Korea, and if the deal is completed, it is expected that it will serve as a signal to reorganize the airline industry.

The terms of the acquisition were settled at 54.5 billion won, which was 15 billion less than originally anticipated, considering the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis. Through this acquisition, Jeju Air was expected to maximize operational efficiency by reducing cost by utilizing economies of scale, securing flexibility in route utilization, and securing price competitiveness based on market share. Furthermore, if Jeju Air, which was the third-largest airline in Korea (9.3%) following the two major national airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, acquires Eastar Air, which had an international passenger market share of 3.3%, it was expected to secure the position of the third place by widening the gap with Jin Air, which ranked fourth in the international passenger market share(5.6%) in Korea.

This figure (12.6%) was only 2.7% lower than the industry's second largest Asiana Airlines (15.3%), and it was expected to provide an opportunity to Jeju Air to stand shoulder to shoulder with both national airlines.
However, due to various issues and noises that have recently occurred, the market is judged that Jeju Air's acquisition of Eastar is virtually nullified. The industry believes that this will have an overall adverse effect on the airline and travel industries, which are struggling to escape the stagnation of the COVID-19 crisis.
