"Do not buy. Adopt." Animal lovers often use this phrase to emphasize the importance of adopting abandoned animals.
It looks like a simple phrase, but it contains implicit meaning.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' survey on the protection and welfare of pets conducted in 2018, 120K animals were abandoned. The number increased by 9.3 percent compared to 2017. While the number of abandoned animals in Korea is increasing year by year, the adoption rate of abandoned dogs has been in the opposite trend.

So what happens to these abandoned animals? Half of them face a tragic end with roadkill, illness, or starvation before being rescued. But even being retrieved to an animal shelter is never hopeful. The environment of an animal shelter is immensely inferior. In summer, they live in extreme heat-trapped in narrow windows-and are poorly managed. Then, after a certain period, animals that didn't get adopted are euthanized. Besides, at this time, organic animal centers are banning volunteers and outsiders from entering the center for the prevention of Coronavirus. During this time of the epidemic, the number of adoption requests has decreased noticeably (by a quarter compared to last year), and it is impossible to find adopters abroad. Animal rights groups say that if the situation persists, they will not be able to manage the overflow of abandoned animals and will eventually be forced to euthanize them.

Numerous sponsors are actively helping out with the animal shelter. Still, support for the animal center is far short compared to the number of animals that are flooding in. Animal lovers have joined forces to argue that more funding should be provided to abandoned animal centers. But most of all, the fundamental way to alleviate this situation is by adopting pets rather than buying them, and owners need to be responsible until the end.

Perhaps our pets love us more than anyone else. But due to one's wrong decision, they might live in pain or face a miserable end. The problem of abandoned animals may be difficult to solve in a short period, but what is certain is that more attention is key to solving the problem of abandoned animals. "Don't buy. Adopt. " Our small actions could change the fate of a creature.

반려동물의 유기, 그 이후

“버리지마세요. 사지말고 입양하세요” - 동물 애호가들은 종종 이 문구를 통해 유기견 입양의 중요성을 알린다.
언뜻 보기에는 단순한 문구 같아 보이지만 이 문구는 조금은 더 심오한 의미를 담고 있다.
2018년에 시행된 농림축산식품부의 반려동물의 보호, 복지 실태조사 결과에 따르면, 2018년에 유기된 동물은 12만마리를 기록했다. 이는 2017년 대비 9.3% 증가한 값이다. 우리나라 유기동물들은 해마다 증가하는 추이를 보이고 있지만 정작 유기견 입양률은 전년대비 하락세를 보이고 있다.

그렇다면 이 수많은 유기견들은 어떻게 되는 걸까? 유기된 동물의 절반은 구조가 되기도 전에 로드킬을 당하거나, 병에 걸리거나, 혹은 굶주림으로 좋지않은 최후를 맞이한다. 그러나 구조가 되어 유기동물보호소로 간다하더라도 결코 희망적이지는 않다. 유기동물보호소의 환경은 그야말로 열악함 그 자체이다. 비좁은 창에 갇히고 제대로 관리 받지도 못하며 여름이 찾아오면, 여름의 무더위 속에 갇혀 살아야한다. 그러다 일정기간이 지나 입양을 가지 못한 동물들은 안락사 하게 된다. 더불어, 코로나 바이러스가 유행하는 이 시점, 유기동물센터에서는 코로나 바이러스 확산 방지를 위해 자원봉사자들이나 외부인 출입을 일체 금하고 있다. 전염병의 여파로 입양문의도 눈에 띄게 줄어들고, 해외 이동봉사자를 구하는 것은 아예 불가능하기 때문에 해외 입양의 길도 막혀 버린상태이다. 통계자료에 의하면 올해는 작년보다 입양문의가 4분의 1 줄어들었다고 한다. 동물보호단체는 이 상태가 지속된다면 넘치는 유기동물들을 감당할수 없어 결국 안락사를 시킬 수밖에 없다는 입장이다.

수많은 후원자들이 유기동물보호소를 위해 적극적인 도움을 주고 있지만, 밀려들어오는 유기동물의 수에 비하면 유기동물센터에 대한 지원은 턱없이 부족하다. 동물 애호가들은 이 사태에 대하여 입을 모아 유기동물센터에 더 많은 자금이 지원되어야 한다고 주장한다. 그렇지만 무엇보다도 이 사태를 완화시킬 수 있는 근본적인 방법은 반려동물을 분양받기 보다는 입양하는 것 그리고 한 생명을 끝까지 책임지는 것이다.

반려동물은 한 평생 자신의 주인만을 바라본다. 어쩌면 그들은 그 누구보다도 우리를 사랑해줄 것이다. 그러나 사람의 오만한 결심 한번으로, 동물들은 불확실한 미래에 고통을 받으며 살거나 비참한 최후를 맞이한다. 유기동물 문제는 단기간에 해결되기에는 힘들겠지만 확실한 것은 작은 관심이 유기동물 문제를 해결하는 데에 있어 핵심이라는 것이다. “버리지 마세요. 사지말고 입양하세요. “-  이는 곧 우리의 사소한 행동이 한 생명체의 운명을 바꾼다는 의미를 담고 있다.
