The football industry has also been experiencing big changes due to the COVID-19. Soccer leagues around the world including those of England, Germany, Spain, Italy, and France also had a number of COVID-19 infections among players, shutting down the soccer field and stopping the league.
As the number of confirmed COVID-19 infection cases decreased per day for each country, the leagues and competitions were resumed under the conditions that players had their hands and soccer shoes sanitized before they participated in their official games. Substitute players and coaches also had to sit as far apart from each other as possible and were recommended not to shake hands. The league games were shortened due to the games that had been suspended, and the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, which draw much attention worldwide every year, were also fast played in neutral countries with single-game matches, not in the previous way of having two matches for Round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals.
Even after the league and competitions were resumed, the crowd income reduced significantly. As a result, many soccer teams are still suffering from financial difficulties. The salaries of soccer players have been greatly reduced, and teams have been restructuring, reducing staff, and even delaying payments on their players and staff members. On the other hand, the market value of popular soccer players, which had previously been heavily inflation, has stabilized.
Prior to COVID-19, FFP regulations that limits the maximum amount of money a club can spend on recruiting players against its annual income for fair play have prevented reckless capital use by affluent soccer clubs. However, clubs are not expected to be restricted by this regulation in the next transfer market, exceptionally due to the COVID-19. Therefore, wealthy Middle Eastern or Chinese club owners will be free from restrictions on FFPs, spending astronomical amounts on the next transfer market competing to recruit talented soccer players. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, a highly-funded Middle Eastern prince attempted to acquire Newcastle United FC, and Chelsea FC has not been able to allocate any budget towards recruiting new players for the past two years in violation of FFP regulations. In the case of Chelsea FC, it nonetheless was not affected much as it already boasted an outstanding squad.
