NASA’s Stratospheric Balloon Project

What is the new project about?
According to Nasa, a team is planning to float a balloon that is similar to the size of a soccer stadium in December 2023 from Antarctica. The balloon will be drifting through the stratosphere and observing the universe for three weeks by carrying a telescope of 2.5m. Named ASTHROS (Astrophysics Stratospheric Telescope for High Spectral Resolution Observations at Submillimeter-wavelengths), the telescope will observe wavelengths of light that are unobservable to humans. ASTHROS will reach the size of 150m when fully inflated with helium gas and the altitude of 40km so that it can observe the wavelengths of light without getting blocked by the earth’s atmosphere.

What will it do?
ASTHROS will specifically observe newly formed stars so that it can measure the motion and the speed of gases and nitrogen ions which could add power to stellar feedback and computer simulations of galaxies. The Stellar feedback is an important process that influences?both negatively and positively?the formations of stars, therefore, studying stellar feedback can be helpful for astronomy in the future. One of the regions that ASTHROS will study and observe is called the Carina Nebula, a region of star-forming in Milky Way. ASTHROS will provide information so that more accurate simulation can be generated. One of the examples would be about nitrogen ions that display supernova explosions that reshape the gas clouds near those regions. This information will provide more detail to the three-dimensional map of gases in studied regions.

How will it work?
In order to attain the goal, ASTHROS will need a cryocooler since the temperature needs to be kept cold. The cooler will keep the temperature of liquid helium to -268.5℃. Moreover, since utilizing a balloon is a state-of-the-art technology that challenges conventional ideas, a mindset that the project will work without any troubles would be required. Even though using a balloon costs lower than other methods, the balloon has higher risks. As Jose Siles, a member of the ASTHROS mission team said “If you stop to think about it, it's really challenging, which makes it so exciting at the same time," the world is excited by the project that would lead to a gate to future science and technologies.
