Faster Corona Vaccine Study with Machine Learning System

The MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) has recently announced a new approach, the Machine Learning system "OptiVax," to reduce the research time needed to develop the COVID-19 vaccine and get closer to solutions.

OptiVax is a platform that utilizes machine learning to select a short amino acid string called peptide that can support a high population range for vaccines. The research team at the AI Research Institute first adjusted the predictive model and used several models to design the vaccine when building this system. As considering the huge differences in individual DNA, researchers paid close attention to the genetic makeup of others to maximize the possibility that people with rare genes would still be protected by vaccines.

OptiVax works by identifying all possible peptide fragments from a set of virus or tumor proteins that would be good candidates for a vaccine. Then, peptides are scored for selection on multiple criteria. Because these peptide fragments originate from viruses, they can be immunized if administered as a vaccine. OptiVax designs vaccines from these candidates to maximize population ranges in different geographic areas and the number of peptides displayed per person to improve the likelihood of becoming immunizers.

The research team then used ‘EvaluationVax,’ a complementary system that predicts coverage for vaccines, to evaluate 29 different vaccine designs by others. They found that many of them were not expected to provide high population coverage.

“One of the challenges here was assembling good data on how people differ in their genetic makeup, in key genes that control the response to a vaccine or viral infection,” says MIT professor David Gifford. “And then, we had to solve a difficult optimization problem to design a vaccine with good population coverage.”

David Gifford MIT
