A Boycott of the Movie ¡®Mulan¡¯
±èÅÂ¿í °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2020.09.24 20:27

The Disney film ‘Mulan,’ which is set to be released in Korea on the 17th, has been under fire. ‘Mulan’ is based on a 1988 animation, which deals with the performance of Mulan, a woman who fought against immigrants’ invasion during the Chinese Civil War. ‘Mulan,’ which has cost more than $200 million to produce, was released in theaters in China on the 11th, but the results are disappointing, contrary to expectations.

The reason why the popularity of ‘Mulan’ is stagnant is because of the boycott. ‘Mulan’ faces a boycott because of China’s human rights problem. When protests against the repatriation law were held in Hong Kong in September last year, Chinese authorities suppressed it with violence. At that time, the controversy began when Liu Yifei, who plays Mulan, made remarks on SNS in support of the Hong Kong police.

The boycott has reached the height of the controversy due to the ending credit of the movie. In the ending credit, the film expressed gratitude to the Chinese public security in Xinjiang that has been a hot topic for the international community due to Beijing’s human rights abuses. Disney explained that it was a formal greeting for the filming site, but it was enough to stir up controversy.

In response to the backlash, activists such as Hong Kong civic activist Joshua Wong proposed the ‘#BoycottMulan,’ and the World Citizens’ Declaration, a civic group in Korea, is joining the proposal.

Disney, which has been sensitive to human rights, is incredibly silent on China. Not only human rights activists but also critics and politicians criticized Disney for succumbing to the Chinese capital. Boycott ‘Mulan’ is essential to point out Disney’s problems and draw attention to China’s human rights issues.

As political issues became controversial, the Chinese government banned ‘Mulan’ from reporting in the country. The controversy is also expected to have a massive impact on the success of ‘Mulan’ in Korea.
