About 40 years ago, the application of plastic bags was launched in grocery stores and until today, people currently encounter this as a global issue that must be resolved. Why is the usage of plastic bags considered as an issue? It is simply because the plastic causes a detrimental effect to our environment. It harms the ecosystem in general by inducing floods, reduction of wildlife, and air pollution. A myriad of countries, therefore, implemented the regulations to ban the plastic bag from the Grocery store. However, these countries did not get much positive influence in their environment. Instead, they faced a significant surge on the amounts of paper trash.

When the policy was established, 30% of the plastic waste was reduced. People used garbage bags and paper bags as the alternatives of plastic. However, as the other two options of bag usage increased, plastic waste had come back to be wasted because garbage bags also contained a large amount of plastic. Also, the countries faced approximately 80 million pounds of paper waste per year due to the surge on paper bag application. It is already confirmed that the paper, involving lots of water and toxic chemicals, is more detrimental than plastic. As a result, by imposing strict regulations of plastic bags, the environment unexpectedly deteriorated in these regions.

Therefore, what would be the best option? If we keep prohibiting the plastic bag, we are going to face an enormous amount of paper trash. If we do not impose any regulations on plastic bags, the plastic usage would constantly increase to the point where it would cause crucial global impact. Here, people need to compile more information and the specific environmental changes that certain laws would potentially possess, and must come up with an effective solution to this problem.

플라스틱 가방의 법적 금지는 지구에 좋은 영향만을 미칠까?

플라스틱 가방은 약 40여년전부터 사용되기 시작했고 현재까지도 플라스틱 가방 사용에 대한 논란은 글로벌 이슈 중 하나이다. 왜 플라스틱 가방의 사용이 이슈인걸까? 무엇보다도 플라스틱이 지구 환경오염에 큰 영향을 끼치기 때문이다. 플라스틱은 홍수를 유발하고, 야생동물을 죽이고, 공기를 오염시킴으로써 환경을 파괴한다. 이때문에, 많은 나라에서 플라스틱 가방 사용 금지 조항을 법으로 시행하였다. 하지만, 이러한 노력에도 지구 환경 보호에 긍정적인 영향은 없었고 오히려 많은 양의 종이 쓰레기가 생겨났다.

플라스틱 가방 사용금지 조항이 만들어 졌을 때, 사람들은 쓰레기봉투와 종이 가방을 플라스틱 가방 대용으로 썼다. 이 두가지 가방의 사용 빈도가 높아지면서 그동안 절약한 플라스틱의 30%가 다시 쓰레기로 되돌아 왔다. 쓰레기 봉투에도 많은 양의 플라스틱이 함유되있기 때문이다. 게다가, 종이 가방 사용도의 급증에 의한 8000만에 육박하는 종이 쓰레기가 매년 생겨났다. 오히려 종이가 많은 양의 물 사용과 독성 화학 물질로 인해 플라스틱보다 환경에 더 악영향 끼친다는 사실이 밝혀지게 되었고, 플라스틱 사용을 금지한 지역들의 환경은 이전보다 더 악화되었다. 

그렇다면 어떻게 해야 할까? 계속해서 플라스틱 가방 사용을 중단한다면, 많은 양의 종이 쓰레기를 직면할 것이고, 플라스틱 가방에 대한 아무런 제제를 가하지 않는다면, 플라스틱 쓰레기는 전세계적인 심각한 환경오염을 일으킬 때까지 계속해서 늘어날 것이다.
이제, 우리 모두는 더 많은 정보와 조항들에 대한 정확한 잠재적 환경 요인들을 제대로 분석해서 더욱 효과적인 방안을 제시해야 할 것이다.
