Living together with our companion animals, such as dogs, cats, etc. needs some corrections for a better society. As you might notice, lately, there are more accidents related to our companion animals. According to statistics of the fire department of Korea, 119 emergencies transferred 6,883 people for the recent three years. Approximately more than 2,000 people per year are having accidents from dog bites.

Specifically, we can see that every six people are having accidents per day. So, let’s know about “etiquette”! “Petiquette” is a combined word of “pet” and “etiquette”, which means a polite behavior in the society of pets. Petiquette encourages five representative types of prevention for accidents, not only for accidents but also for a better relationship between pets and people.

First, there is a ‘companion animal registration system’ that prevents abandon and losing our pets, as well as increasing people’s responsibility. Second, only for dogs, it is mandatory to take a walk every day. As humans need a cloth, food, and a house to live, dogs need a walk, food, and a house to live. Third, as there are more complaints are reported, we should prepare materials for cleaning up the dog’s mess. Fourth, like humans, dogs need to check their health regularly to prevent from getting diseases.

Lastly, do not abandon your companion animals. According to the 2019 companion animals’ protection?welfare research result, 135,791 of companion animals were abandoned and the rate of abandoned animals is increasing every year by 12 percent. Remember, companion animals are similar to us, as they need the same things as humans need. As humans, companion animals are part of our family, and we are responsible for them. If there is a selection, there should be a responsibility of that choice. If a person brings a companion animal in one’s house, one should take care of one’s family member.

반려동물과 더불어 살아가기 위한 펫티켓

2019년 기준으로 반려동물 양육 인구는 대략 1418만 명에 육박하는 것으로 조사되었다. 개, 고양이 등의 반려동물과 같이 사는 사람들이 점점 늘고 있는 시대에, 더 나은 사회를 만들기 위해서는 몇몇의 고칠 점이 필요하다.

최근 반려동물과 관련되어 늘어나고 있는 사건들을 보면 알 수 있다. 2019년 소방청의 통계에 따르면, 최근 3년 동안 119구조대가 개 물림 사고로 6883명을 병원으로 이송하였다. 대략 매년 2000명 이상이 반려동물에 의한 사고를 당하고 있다. 구체적으로 하루 여섯 명이 개 물림 사고를 당하는 것이다.

이러한 사고를 예방하고 반려동물과 함께하는 더 나은 삶을 위한 '펫티켓'을 알아보자. '펫티켓'이란 펫과 에티켓의 합성어로 더 나은 사회를 위한 반려동물들의 예법이라는 뜻이다. 펫티켓은 대표적으로 5가지의 사고방지를 추구하는데, 사고를 방지하는 것뿐만 아닌, 더 나은 사람과 반려동물의 관계를 추구한다.

첫 번째로, ‘반려동물등록제’가 있다. 이 반려동물등록제는 반려동물의 유실과 유기를 방지하며, 보호자의 책임감을 높이고 더욱 안전하게 반려동물을 관리할 수 있는 체제이다.

두 번째로, 견주들만 지켜야 할 규칙인 매일 산책이 있다. 고양이는 수직 동물이라 수직 운동을 주로 하며, 영역 동물로, 자기냄새가 아닌 다른 냄새가 많은 밖에서는 스트레스를 받기 때문에 이 규칙에 포함되지 않는다. 반면 견주에게는 반려견들의 매일 산책이 필수이다. 사람에게는 의/식/주가 삶의 필수라면, 반려견은  보(步)/식/주가 필수이다.

세 번째로는 반려동물과 외출 때 꼭 지켜야 할 사항인 배변 처리 준비물 지키기다. 공원이나 길거리에서 산책할 경우 반려동물의 배변 문제로 민원 신고가 갈수록 늘어나고 있다. 따라서 이 규칙을 지키도록 하자.

네 번째는 반려동물의 정기적인 건강검진을 하는 것이다. 반려동물들은 사람과 거의 비슷한 것들을 필요로 한다. 각종 질병들을 예방하고 더 나은 건강을 위해 정기적으로 반려동물의 건강확인을 하는 게 좋다.

마지막으로, 반려동물을 끝까지 책임지자. 2019년 반려동물 보호?복지 실태조사 결과에 따르면 13만5791마리의 반려동물들이 유기되었고, 해마다 유기되는 반려동물들이 12% 가량 늘어나고 있다. 사람과 같이 반려동물은 우리 가족의 일부분이며, 우리는 우리의 가족을 책임질 필요가 있다.

선택을 하면 책임을 지듯이, 사람이 반려동물을 가족의 일부분으로 데리고 올 때에는 그 반려동물에 대한 책임이 필수이다. 더 나은 사람과 반려동물의 관계, 더 나은 사회를 위해서 이 펫티켓을 꼭 지키자.
