The month of September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign that aims to raise awareness about the disease and challenge the stigma that surrounds it. World Alzheimer’s Day is celebrated every year on September 21 as part of the campaign and promotes disease prevention and treatment. This year, the theme of the month is “Let’s talk about Dementia”, which highlights the struggles faced by the people living with dementia and the ways to overcome them.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, is a progressive brain disorder that leads to a decline in general cognitive functions. Some of the most prominent symptoms of AD include memory loss, disabilities in taking in new information, and impaired visuospatial abilities. The disease is known to be caused by an abnormal build-up of proteins - amyloid and tau - around brain cells, which eventually leads to the loss of brain tissue. One of the first areas to be damaged is the hippocampus, a part of the brain that controls memory, thought, and language. However, despite ongoing research, it is unknown what causes this process to begin.

How is it treated?
There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but there are medication and psychological therapies available to help temporarily relieve the symptoms. One of the most common medicine is Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, which helps nerve cells communicate with each other. Also, the early diagnosis is proven to help slow the progression of AD.

Unlike what most people assume it to be, Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. There are ways to reduce the risk of developing the disease by taking steps to improve your cardiovascular health. These include physical exercises, a healthy diet, and regular health tests.
