When we hear the word immigrant, we typically think that immigrants are successful. Sandra Oh - a Korean immigrant, one of the lead actresses of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Jerry Yang, a Taiwanese immigrant, a co-founder of Yahoo. Donald Trump is also a descendant of a German immigrant.

With this type of immigrant representation, it is easy to turn a blind eye to the immigrants who missed their chances at success and have it harder just because of their nationality. According to a survey done by the PEW Research Center, many countries had varying percentages (but a huge portion nonetheless) of the population thinking that immigrants are a “burden” on their country - the lowest percentage being 27% in Canada and 74% at Greece. Many also agreed that immigrants are to blame for crimes and increases in terrorism. Some even supported illegal deportation.

However, if we take a look at what these unsuccessful immigrants are doing, it is clear that most of them are serving as the backbone of the economy - doing crucial and unpleasant jobs with low wages. For instance, there are jobs such as employees in restaurants, construction sites, and factories, etc. Perhaps that is why immigrants are so undervalued - people conveniently associate immigrants with these inferior jobs and sectors of society, portraying them as a sort of social outcasts who work for them.

This is becoming more and more relevant in Korea as immigrant rates are rapidly increasing - there are currently around 2.5 million immigrants (consisting of 5% of the country’s entire population). With these growing numbers, we must find areas for migrant integration and training to prepare people to embrace immigrants in a more welcoming manner. After all, they are immigrants who have come to stay as citizens, not short-term visitors.

"외국인? 이주민? 한국인"

우리는 이주민라는 단어를 접했을 때 보통 성공한 사람들을 떠올리기 쉽다. 한국계 이민2세이자 '그레이 아나토미'의 주연 중 한 명이었던 산드라 오, 대만계 이민자이자 야후의 공동설립자인 제리 양 같은 사람들이 성공한 이주민들이다. 사실, 도널드 트럼프도 독일계 이민자의 후손이다.

이주민에 대한 일반적인 이미지로 인해 우리는 성공에 대한 기회가 없었던 이주민들, 그들의 국적으로 인해 더 고통을 받고 있는 이주민들을 인식하지 못하고 있을 수 있다. PEW 리서치 센터의 조사에 따르면 많은 나라가 이주민들이 그들 나라에 부담이 되고 있다고 생각한다고 한다. 해당 연구에서 가장 낮은 결과를 보여준 캐나다의 경우 국민의 27%가 이주민들이 부담이라고 응답하였으며, 그리스의 경우는 74%에 달했다. 많은 경우 이주민들이 범죄와 테러 증가의 원인이라고 답했고, 일부는 이주민들의 추방을 지지하기도 했다.

실제로 이주민들이 어떤 일을 하는지 살펴보면, 그들은 낮은 급여를 받으며 다른 사람들이 기피하는 힘든 일을 하면서 각 나라의 경제에 큰 도움을 주고 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 될 것이다(예를 들어, 식당 종업원들, 건설 현장과 공장의 노동자들). 이러한 현실로 인해 이주민들이 과소평가되고 경시되는지도 모른다. 사람들은 이주민들을 열등하고 중요하지 않은 일 또는 힘든 업종에서 일하는 사람들로 인식하고, 이주민들을 자신들의 편의를 위해 3D 업종의 일을 해야 하는 사회의 낙오자처럼 생각하고 있을 수 있기 때문이다.

이주민의 숫자가 빠르게 증가하고 있는 한국 또한 이러한 이주민 문제에서 자유롭지 않다. 한국에 거주하는 이주민의 수는 현재 약 2500만명이며, 이는 한국 인구의 약 5%에 해당하는 숫자이다. 이를 고려할 때, 이주민들을 지금보다 더 잘 포용하기 위한 이주민 통합 프로그램 또는 교육이 대단히 중요하다고 생각된다. 이주민들은 잠깐 머물고 떠나는 방문객이 아니라, 이 나라의 국민으로서 우리와 함께 오랫동안 살기 위해 온 사람들이기 때문이다.
