With Corona 19, our daily lives have changed a lot from before. As people stay indoors longer, orders for delivery and delivery food have increased, and disposable waste has increased several times as much as usual. According to the prediction of the recycling industry, disposable waste will be piled up to the point that apartment separate collection centers will no longer be able to handle it, and the growth of recycled waste will be the largest ever in 2020. Disposable products are household items that are used once and discarded, so they are a big part of environmental pollution. As the prolonged Corona 19 crisis is raising concerns over a possible waste crisis, it is urgent to come up with measures to reduce emissions of disposable products.

First, all we have to do is separate emissions. Separation discharge is the first step in enabling recyclable resources to be used as renewable materials. As economics grows, disposable wastes will be produced continuously. Therefore, recycling should be mandatory, and the market that utilizes recycled materials should be developed. If recyclable wastes are properly classified, it can reduce the burden of screening and become a high-quality resource. Besides, containers that are difficult to clean and classify, such as cosmetic containers and shampoo containers, will be effective if the government introduces a deposit system for soju bottles and beer bottles.

Second, fundamentally what we need to do is to reduce the use of disposable products and increase the use of multi-use products. This will reduce disposable waste. Instead of using disposable cups at cafes, we can use mugs or tumblers and shopping baskets without using plastic bags at supermarkets. Instead of wet wipes or hand towels that are easily extracted from the bathroom, using a handkerchief protects the environment and is practical. It is also a good idea to use silicon, paper, and stainless steel straw that can be reused several times rather than disposable plastic straws.

The eco-friendly outdoor brand Patagonia has been using recycled polyester fabric to make winter clothes in recent years. If people are interested in brands that strive for a sustainable environment and use the products, other companies will be able to care about the environment. Even if we don't do environmental activities with grand slogans, if we pay a little attention to using or discharging disposable products in our daily lives, it will be protecting the environment in itself. There is no room in our society for facilities and systems to handle disposable product waste, the shadow of the Corona 19 era. Therefore, it is time to seriously consider the government's regulations on the reckless use of disposable products.

코로나19와 일회용품 쓰레기 대란, 우리가 해야 할 일은?

코로나19로 우리의 일상생활은 이전과는 많이 달라졌다. 사람들이 실내에 머무는 시간이 길어지면서 택배와 배달음식 주문이 늘고 일회용품 쓰레기도 평소의 몇 배 가량 늘어나게 되었다. 아파트 분리수거장은 더 이상 쌓아놓을 곳이 없을 정도로 일회용품 쓰레기가 산을 이루고, 재활용품 수거업계에서는 2020년 재활용품 폐기물 증가세가 사상 최대일 것으로 예상하고 있다. 일회용품은 말 그대로 한 번 쓰고 버려지는 생활용품이기 때문에 환경오염에 큰 부분을 차지한다. 코로나19 사태 장기화로 쓰레기 대란 우려가 커지고 있는 만큼 일회용품 배출량을 줄일 수 있는 방안 마련이 시급하다.

첫째, 우리가 해야 할 일은 분리배출이다.
분리배출은 재활용이 가능한 자원을 재생원료로 사용할 수 있게 하는 첫 단계다. 경제 활동은 지속될 수밖에 없기 때문에 일회용품 쓰레기는 계속 배출될 수밖에 없다. 따라서 일회용품 쓰레기의 재활용률을 높이고 재생원료를 활용하는 시장을 키워야 한다. 재활용 쓰레기를 같은 재질끼리 깨끗하게 분리배출하면 선별하는 데 드는 부담도 줄고 고품질 자원이 될 수 있다. 또 화장품이나 샴푸용기처럼 세척하기 어렵고 여러 재질이 혼합되어 분리가 어려운 용기들은 소주병이나 맥주병 보증금 제도를 도입하면 실효성이 있을 것이다.

둘째, 근본적으로 우리가 해야 할 일은 일회용품 사용을 줄이고 다회용품 사용을 늘리는 것이다. 이렇게 하면 일회용품 쓰레기 자체를 줄일 수 있다. 카페에서 일회용품 컵을 쓰기보다 머그컵이나 텀블러를 이용하고, 마트에서 비닐봉투를 쓰지 않고 장바구니를 활용한다. 음식물을 흘렸을 때나 청소할 때 쓰는 물티슈나 화장실에서 쉽게 뽑아쓰는 핸드타올 대신 손수건을 가지고 다니면 환경도 보호하고 실용적이다. 세척이 어려워 한 번 사용하면 그냥 버려지는 플라스틱 빨대를 되도록 쓰지 않고 음료를 마시거나 여러 번 재사용이 가능한 실리콘, 종이, 스테인레스 소재의 빨대를 사용하는 것도 좋은 방법이다.

친환경 아웃도어 브랜드 파타고니아에서는 최근 몇 년간 재활용 폴리에스테르 원단을 활용하여 겨울 옷을 만들고 있다. 사람들이 지속가능한 환경을 위해 노력하는 브랜드에 관심을 갖고 그 제품을 사용한다면 다른 기업들도 환경에 관심을 갖는 분위기가 조성될 것이다. 거창한 구호를 내세워 환경운동을 하지 않더라도 일상생활에서 일회용품을 사용하거나 배출할 때 우리가 조금만 신경쓰면 그 자체로 환경을 보호하는 일이 될 것이다. 코로나19 시대의 그늘인 일회용 제품 쓰레기를 처리할 시설과 시스템까지 갖출 여력이 우리 사회에는 없다. 따라서 이제는 무분별한 일회용품 사용에 대한 정부의 규제도 심각히 고려해볼 때다.
