Issues and research on artificial intelligence are getting faster and deeper around the world. Artificial intelligence is said to be the core of the fourth industrial revolution. In particular, companies may disappear in the future unless they compete for better artificial intelligence now. The university plays a role in nurturing more and more talent to prevent such a situation. But are local universities getting enough support and support to nurture talent?

No matter how much the government or companies support them, it is challenging to secure professors to nurture laid-off talent." Universities are not actively bringing professors to their schools because if all prominent professors come to a particular school, other schools have to take many risks and nurture students.

Of course, many talented Korean are abroad, which significantly helps the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Especially on Google in the U.S., Koreans are showing off their skills. Money is the reason why we cannot recruit such smart people. The biggest reason is that if you bring Google AI PhDs, who can earn at least 500 million won a year at Google, to Korean universities, you will not be able to pay 100 million won a year.

And no matter what method they use to train talented people, they are expected to be taken away from famous overseas companies eventually because Korean companies must treat qualified AI experts as honorable as foreign companies do to catch them. Domestic companies have also built research centers in large countries such as the United States and Canada to secure AI talent at the level of those countries.

It is essential for our country not to increase AI graduate schools or schools further, but to increase the amount of money it provides to attract smarter professors to create the best schools to compete with world-famous schools.

대한민국의 인공지능 인재들은 왜 외국에 있을까?

전 세계적으로 인공지능에 대한 이슈와 연구가 더욱더 빨라지고 깊어지고 있다. 인공지능은 제4차 산업혁명의 핵심이기 때문에 특히 기업들은 더 뛰어난 인공지능 기술을 확보하지 않으면 미래에 그 기업은 사라질 수도 있다. 대학은 이런 상황을 막기 위해서 많은 인공지능 인재들을 양성하기 위한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 그러나 국내 대학들은 이러한 미래 인재들을 양성하기 위해 충분한 지지와 지원을 받고 있을까?

정부와 기업이 인재 육성을 위해 대학에 많은 지원을 하고 있지만 대학은 유능한 인공지능 교수들을 확보하기 힘들다고 토로한다. 대학이 적극적으로 교수들을 데려오지 못하는 이유는 특정 학교에 유능한 교수들이 모두 모인다면 그렇지 않은 다른 학교들은 학생들을 교육하는 데에 많은 어려움이 있기 때문이다.

물론 현재 외국에서 활동하는 많은 한국 인공지능 인재들이 있다. 특히 미국의 구글에서도 활동하고 있는 한국인들이 있다. 그런 똑똑한 인재들을 스카우트해오지 못하는 이유는 바로 ‘돈’ 때문이다. 구글에서는 연봉 5억원은 받을 수 있는 구글 인공지능 박사들이 한국 대학에서는 연봉 1억도 못받는 현실때문이다.

또한 한국에서 인공지능 영재들을 양성한다고 해도 많은 경우 여러 좋은 조건을 제시하는 해외 유명 기업으로 가는 경우가 많이 있다. 이러한 인재를 빼앗기지 않으려면 한국 기업들도 외국 기업들만큼 좋은 대우를 해줘야 한다. 몇몇 국내 기업들도 인공지능 인재 유치를 위해서 미국이나 캐나다 같은 외국에 연구소를 건설하여 그 국가들의 수준으로 인공지능 인재들을 확보해왔다.

우리 나라는 인공지능 대학원이나 학교를 늘리기 보다는 유능하고 실력있는 교수들을 확보하기 위해 지원을 아끼지 않고 투자해서 세계 유명 학교들과 경쟁할 수 있는 최고의 학교를 만드는 것이 중요하다.
