One of the most unexpected and seemingly inexplicable consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic is the surge in Alzheimer’s deaths. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, at least more than 15,000 Americans have died in recent months from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia (ADRD) than otherwise would have, which is equivalent to an 18% increase compared to previous years. Although it is difficult to pinpoint a single definite reason behind the unexpected surge, scientists have proposed possible explanations, each backed with evidence.

Perhaps the most obvious reason is that the majority of Alzheimer’s patients are 65 or older, which puts them at a greater risk once exposed to the virus. It is known that older people are much more susceptible to fatality from COVID-19, with more than 80% of COVID-19 related deaths being among adults aged 65 years and older. Furthermore, in the time of a pandemic, medical care of all kinds becomes less accessible. Due to the exponentially rising number of infected patients, the pandemic is preventing people from seeking needed care and hospitalization.

Another possible explanation, perhaps more specific to Alzheimer’s patients, is that disrupted routines have led to heightened anxiety and depression, all of which can cause a steeper decline in mental health and cognitive functions. For instance, due to social distancing policies, family visits in care facilities are no longer permitted. Consequently, patients with ADRD, unable to understand and realize the circumstances of the pandemic, experience feelings of abandonment.

Although there are past indications of connections between the coronavirus and brain health, the neurological effects of the coronavirus are still unclear. It might take years, or even up to several generations, to fully understand how the virus affects our brains.

코로나19 대유행의 가장 예상치 못한 결과 중 하나는 알츠하이머 사망자의 급증이다. 월스트리트 저널 기사에 따르면, 최근 몇 달 동안 적어도 10만 명 이상의 미국인이 알츠하이머병 및 치매 (ADRD)로 사망했으며, 이는 이전 해에 비해 18 % 증가한 수치이다. 예상치 못한 급증의 원인을 정확히 찾아 내기는 어렵지만 과학자들은 가능한 이유를 밝혔고 뒷받침하는 각각의 증거도 찾아냈다.

그중 가장 명백한 이유는 알츠하이머 환자의 대부분이 65세 이상의 고령 환자들이라는 사실이다. 코로나 사망자의 80%는 65세 이상의 고령자로, 고령자는 코로나로 인한 사망에 훨씬 더 취약한 것으로 알려져 있다. 더욱이 전염병이 닥치면 기존의 병을 앓고 있던 환자들에게 가능한 의료 서비스도 현저히 줄어들게 된다. 전 세계 확진자 수가 기하급수적으로 증가함에 따라 전염병으로 인해 다른 병을 앓고 있는 환자들조차 필요한 치료를 못받는 경우가 발생한다.

특히 알츠하이머 환자들은 일상생활이 중단되면 더욱 극심한 불안과 우울증을 초래해 정신 건강과 인지 기능이 급격히 저하될 수 있다. 예를 들어 사회적 거리두기 정책으로 인해 요양 시설의 가족 방문은 더이상 허용되지 않고 있다. 이로 인해 전염병의 심각성을 이해하지 못하는 ADRD 환자들은 자신들이 버려졌다고 생각할 수 있기 때문이다.

코로나 바이러스와 뇌 건강 사이에 밀접한 관련이 있다는 추측들이 있지만 코로나 바이러스의 신경학적 영향은 아직 밝혀지지 않았다. 바이러스가 우리의 뇌에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아 내려면 몇 년 또는 최대 몇 세대가 걸릴 수도 있다.
