A 56-year-old, US Sen. Kamala Harris of California will be the first vice-president who's female, black, and Asian American.

Harris comes from a mixed-race background where she was raised to celebrate both halves of her family's traditions and heritage.
Being a woman of color and child of two immigrant parents, Harris was proud of her mixed heritage. Harris was raised primarily by her South-Indian mother Shyamala, a single mom after she separated from her Jamaican husband, Donald Harris. Even though Shyamala is from India, she thought it is necessary to raise two daughters as strong and powerful black women in Berkeley. Harris attended Howard University, a historically black college/university (HBCU) where Harris studied political science and economics.

After graduating from Howard in 1986, she moved back to California to attend the University of California's Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and became a lawyer in 1990. She was the first African-American and first woman to become district attorney of San Francisco and later Attorney General of California. In 2016, she was elected as the first Black senator in California. She ran for president in the 2020 election but dropped out in December 2019. Then she was selected as former Vice President Joe Biden's running mate on Aug. 11st, 2020. While the two have now formed a historic partnership, Harris was Biden's rival last year.

Now, as a vice president-elect, she told America that they had chosen "hope and unity, decency, science and, yes, truth." Then she paid tribute to the women: "while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last," she said. "Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities."

미국의 부통령 당선자, 카말라 해리스는 누구인가?

현 캘리포니아주 상원의원인 카말라 해리스 (56세)는 여성, 흑인, 아시아계 미국인인 최초의 부통령이 될 예정이다.

Harris는 가족과 전통의 유산을 중요시하며 자라온 혼혈인 출신이다. 유색인종인 해리스는 이민자 부모님의 밑에서 자신의 혼혈 유산을 자랑스럽게 생각하며 자메이카인 아버지인 도널드 해리스와 갈라선 싱글맘인 남인도인 어머니 샤말라에 밑에서 자랐다. 샤말라는 인도 출신이지만 버클리에서는 두 딸을 강하고 힘센 흑인 여성으로 키우는 것이 필수적이라고 생각했다. 그리하여 해리스는 역사적으로 흑인 대학(HBCU)인 하워드 대학에서 정치학과 경제학을 공부했다.

그녀는 1986년 하워드 대학교를 졸업한 뒤 캘리포니아로 건너가 샌프란시스코에 있는 캘리포니아대 헤이스팅스 법학전문대학에 입학한 뒤 1990년 변호사가 되었다.

또한 해리스는 샌프란시스코의 지방 검사가 된 최초의 아프리카계 미국인이자 최초의 여성이며 후에 캘리포니아 주 검찰총장이 되었다. 2016년에는 캘리포니아 출신의 첫 흑인 상원의원으로 선출되었고. 이후 2019년 12월 대선에서 중도 하차하며 2020년 대선에 출마했으며 2020년 8월 11일 조 바이든 전 부통령의 러닝메이트로 발탁되었다.

두 사람이 역사적인 파트너십 이후에 해리스는 지난해 바이든의 라이벌이 되기도 하였으나, 이제 그녀는 부통령 당선자로서, 미국은 "희망과 단결, 품위, 과학 그리고, 단연, 진실"을 선택한다고 역설하였다.

또한 그녀는 여성들에게 경의를 표하며, "내가 이 사무실의 첫 번째 여성이 될지는 모르지만, 내가 마지막 여성이 되지는 않을 것"이라고 연설하였으며, 그 이유를 "오늘밤을 지켜보는 모든 어린 소녀들이 이곳이 가능성의 나라라는 것을 보기 때문이다" 라고 자신의 진심을 세상에 전달하였다.
