Not one but two experimental vaccines proved at least 90% effective against COVID-19 last month: one from Pfizer/BioNTech and another from Moderna. However, it is too early to celebrate. There is still a barrage of questions that needs an answer. Can the vaccine produce better results? How long will the vaccine be effective? How well will they protect the elderly or young? Also what if the virus mutates to become immune?

Already, an altered variation of the coronavirus has appeared in European minks, causing millions of minks to be culled and buried. This brings to the light the possibility of further mutations of the virus, necessitating the need for contingencies.

Since May, US researchers have reported immune responses from T-cells against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, that had previous exposure to different coronaviruses. T-cells can only respond to a virus during infection, not work as prevention; thus, scientists are continuing to search for alternate immune responses that could counter COVID-19, mainly with antibodies.
The current vaccines elicit IgG antibodies in the body, which has a long-lasting response compared to IgA antibodies. IgA antibodies, on the other hand, appear quickly in the body after an infection, and enhancing them could prevent an infection.

Still, having two effective vaccines almost within a year of the outbreak is an incredible feat. People can enjoy a sense of relief for now, as those in need will be able to benefit from the vaccines within months. In the meantime, we must remain vigilant as vaccines work towards not only recovery but also preventing infections as well.

백신을 위한 끊임없는 질주

지난달 COVID-19에 대해 화이자(Pfizer/BioNTech)와 모더나(Moderna) 두 개의 실험 백신이 적어도 90%의 효과가 있는 것으로 입증되었다. 그러나 축하하기에는 아직 이르다. 여전히 답이 필요한 질문들이 빗발치고 있다. 백신이 더 좋은 결과를 낼 수 있을까? 백신은 얼마나 오래 효과가 있을까? 노약자나 어린이를 얼마나 잘 보호할 것인가? 만약 바이러스가 변이하여 백신에 대한 면역력이 생기면 어떡할까?

이미 유럽 밍크들 사이에서 코로나 바이러스의 변이가 나타나 수백만 마리가 도살 처분되기도 했다. 이것은 바이러스의 추가 변종의 가능성을 밝히고, 만일의 사태를 대비해야 할 중요성을 강조하였다.

지난 5월부터 미국 연구진은 이전에 다른 코로나 종에 노출되었던 T세포에서 현재 코로나바이러스를 발생시키는 SARS-CoV-2에 면역 반응을 나타낸 것을 보고해 왔다. 하지만 T세포는 감염 중에만 바이러스에 반응을 할 수 있고 예방에는 작용을 할 수 없다. 따라서, 과학자들은 주로 항체를 다루어 COVID-19에 대항할 수 있는 대체 면역 반응을 연구하고 있다.

현재 백신은 IgA 항체에 비해 반응이 오래가는 IgG 항체를 체내에서 활성화시킨다. 반면, IgA 항체는 감염 후 체내에서 빠르게 나타나며 이를 강화한다면 감염을 예방할 수 있다.

그래도 발병 후 거의 1년 만에 두 개의 효과적인 백신이 나왔다는 것은 놀라운 업적이다. 위급한 사람들에게 수개월 내에 백신을 접종할 수 있을 것이란 기대 때문에 사람들은 일단 안도하고 있다. 우리는 백신이 바이러스로부터 회복뿐만 아니라 감염 예방에도 효과가 있기를 기다리며 경계를 늦추지 말아야 한다.
