Bitcoin, which caused a sensation around the world in 2017, has finally returned to the same price range as it did three years ago. According to the Bitcoin Price Index on the Coin Desk, the price of global Bitcoin reached 19,850 dollars (21,560 dollars) per day. It surpassed the record high set in 2017. Considered these factors, it is thought that the virtual currency market is almost the same as it was three years ago, but in effect, there are many changes. Compared to 2017, the industry has constructed an infrastructure that requires a considerable amount of money, and many institutional investors have joined the industry.

While there were few clear reasons to rationalize the high price of bitcoin in 2017, this time the technological foundation of virtual currency such as bitcoin has been strengthened. Also, after the corona crisis, funds to stimulate the economy have flowed all over the world, and it is believed that they are in line with the upward trend of asset prices due to fears of sudden inflation.

Since 2017, the market environment for virtual currency technology such as bitcoin has changed greatly. First, there are more places to use it. The U.S. online payment company PayPal launched a service in November that deals with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others. Bitcoin, which had been treated as illegal money, is gradually entering the system. The introduction of digital currency technology by governments and national banks around the world also changed the perception of bitcoin. Finally, a decrease in bitcoin supply due to a half-life period is another factor of the price increase. The total number of bitcoin issues is set at 21 million, and the issue process (mining) will be finished by 4040. Currently, 18.6 million units are mined and distributed in the market. 2.4 million bitcoins will be supplied to the market.

On the other hand, there are still many negative prospects. In November, world-renowned investor Ray Dario wrote on his Twitter account, "Bitcoin cannot be seen as a means of preserving value," and "The government will not allow it to go up to a position similar to gold." If the government's digital currency is issued in earnest, Bitcoin could collapse in an instant.

비트코인 상승세, 무엇이 다른가?

지난 2017년, 전 세계를 떠들썩 하게 만들었던 비트코인은 다소 긴 기다림 끝에 마침내 3년 전과 같은 가격대로 돌아왔다. 코인데스크 비트코인 가격 인덱스에 따르면 글로벌 비트코인 가격은 지난 10월 1일 1만9850달러(2156만원)를 기록했다. 2017년 기록한 최고가를 추월한 셈이다. 이를 비추어 볼 때, 암호화폐 시장이 3년 전과 비슷해 졌다고 생각할 수 있지만, 실제로는 많은 변화가 생겼다. 2017년에 비해 업계는 상당한 양의 필요한 인프라가 구축되었고 많은 기관투자자들이 가세하고 있다는 분석이다.

2017년에는 비트코인의 높은 가격을 합리화할 만한 뚜렷한 이유가 부족했지만, 이번에는 비트코인과 같은 가상 화폐에 대한 기술적 기반이 탄탄해지고 있다. 또 신종 코로나 사태 이후 경기 부양을 위한 돈이 전 세계에 흘러 넘치면서 급격한 물가 상승(인플레이션)을 우려한 자산 가격 상승 기조와도 맞물렸다는 해석이 나오고 있다.

2017년 이후 비트코인 등 가상 화폐 기술의 시장 환경은 크게 변화했다. 우선 활용처가 늘어났다. 미국 온라인 결제 업체 페이팔은 지난 11월 비트코인?이더리움 등을 거래하는 서비스를 시작했다. 그리고 불법 화폐 취급을 받던 비트코인이 조금씩 제도권으로 들어오고 있다. 세계 각국 정부와 중앙은행이 디지털 화폐 기술을 도입하는 것도 비트코인에 대한 인식을 바꾸는 계기가 됐다. 마지막으로 비트코인 공급량이 줄어드는 ‘반감기'로 인해 비트코인의 공급량이 줄어드는 것도 가격 상승 요인 중 하나이다. 비트코인은 전체 발행 개수가 2100만 개로 정해져 있고, 2040년엔 발행 과정(채굴)도 끝난다. 현재 시장에는 1860만 개가 채굴돼 유통되는 중이다. 앞으로 시장에 공급되는 비트코인은 240만 개다.

하지만 반대로 부정적 전망도 여전히 많다. 지난 11월 세계적인 투자가인 레이 달리오는 자신의 트위터에 “비트코인은 가치 저장 수단으로 보기 어렵다”며 “금과 비슷한 위치에 오르는 것을 정부가 허용하지 않을 것”이라고 했다. 정부 디지털 화폐가 본격 발행되면 비트코인이 한 순간에 몰락할 수 있다는 것이다.
