By 2021, many Korean game companies are ready to launch their newest games. Devsisters, a company known globally for creating Cookie Run, is preparing to launch an RPG game called the Cookie Run Kingdom. It uses the same intellectual property(IP) from the original running game. Fans are excited that Devsisters is releasing another Cookie Run franchise game after 1 year has passed from launching Cookie Run Puzzle World. Prior reservations had started since December 4th, 2020, and already 1 million people had participated. Devsisters promised to give out in-game items as well as presents such as iPads or AirPods through lottery. The official date of release hasn’t been announced yet, but according to the Apple App Store, it is expected to be released by January 21st.

Meanwhile, Ntreev Soft, a subsidiary company of NCSOFT, is preparing to release the remastered version of Trickster Online, TricksterM on mobile. Almost 7 years have passed since the original version of the game had shut down its server, which caused the old Trickster players to be excited about the news. Prior reservations have started since October 28th, 2020, and 2 million people have participated. Ntreev Soft had also promised in-game items and presents just like Devsisters. The game was originally planned to be released during the 4th quarter of 2020, but for an unknown reason, it seems the release has been delayed to 2021.

Unlike companies with many experiences such as Devsisters or Ntreev Soft, some new company is planning to release their first game to enter the gaming industry. That company is NPIXEL. NPIXEL has been established in 2017, and have worked for almost 3 years to release the RPG game GRANSAGA. Though the company itself is new, many skilled developers of the game Seven Nights from Netmarble are gathered, which attracted an investment of \ 30 billion(equivalent to about $ 27 million). Gamers’ expectations are as high as the investment amount. Prior reservations started on November 13th, 2020, and over 3 million people had participated. According to the Apple App Store, the game’s expected release date is January 28th.

The common feature of the games mentioned above is that in 2021, Korean game companies are focused on releasing RPG games. People should be aware of how other game companies will respond to this trend after the 1st quarter of this year, by either making RPG games or trying to attack another genre.

2021, 한국 게임 산업의 미래는?
여러 회사들 게임 출시 앞두고 있어···

2021년을 앞두고 여러 한국 게임 회사들의 신규 게임들이 출시에 임박했다. 쿠키런으로 전세계에 이름을 알린 데브시스터즈는 쿠키런 IP를 활용한 RPG 게임인 쿠키런: 킹덤을 출시할 예정이다. 2020년 1월에 출시한 쿠키런: 퍼즐 월드 이후로 1년만에 쿠키런 IP게임을 출시하는 것이라 화제를 모으고 있다. 지난 12월 4일부터 사전예약을 시작했고, 벌써 100만명이 참여를 했다고 전했다. 사전예약에 참여하면 인게임 아이템 및 추첨을 통해 아이패드 프로와 에어팟 프로 등의 여러 보상을 나눠주기로 약속했다. 공식으로 발표하지는 않았지만 애플 앱 스토어에 따르면 1월 21일에 출시할 예정이라고 한다.

대기업 엔씨소프트의 자회사인 엔트리브 소프트는 전에 개발했던 트릭스터를 리메이크한 모바일 MMORPG 트릭스터M을 출시할 예정이다. 전작의 서비스가 종료된지 약 7년만에 출시를 앞두고 있어 트릭스터를 했던 유저들에게 많은 기대를 얻고 있다. 지난 10월 28일부터 사전예약을 시작해 200만명이 참여를 했다고 전했다. 엔트리브 소프트도 데브시스터즈와 비슷하게 인게임 아이템 및 추첨선물을 나눠주기로 약속했다. 원래 2020년 4분기에 출시 예정이었으나 출시일에 대한 자세한 정보를 발표하지 않은 것으로 보아 2021년으로 출시를 미뤄둔 것 같다.

데브시스터즈와 엔트리브 소프트처럼 오랜 경험이 있는 회사가 있는 반면에, 첫 게임의 출시로 도전장을 내밀 준비를 하고 있는 신생 회사도 존재한다. 바로 엔픽셀(NPIXEL)이다. 엔픽셀은 2017년에 창립되어 약 3년에 걸쳐 RPG 게임인 그랑사가를 출시할 예정이다. 신생 회사이긴 하지만, 넷마블의 세븐나이츠를 작업했던 실력을 인정받은 개발자들이 모여 있어 회사의 높은 가치로 300억원의 투자 유치를 받았다고 밝혔다. 엄청난 투자 금액 만큼 게이머들의 많은 기대를 받고 있다. 지난 11월 13일에 사전예약을 시작해 300만명이 넘게 참여했다고 한다. 애플 앱 스토어에 따르면 1월 28일에 출시할 예정이라고 한다.

공통적으로 보았을때 2021년도에는 한국 게임 회사들이 RPG 장르에 초점을 맞춘 것으로 보인다. 올해 1분기 이후에 다른 게임 회사들도 RPG 게임을 공략할지, 아니면 다른 장르의 게임으로 경쟁을 할 것인지 주목해봐야 할 부분이다.
