COVID-19: A Need for a Change
¹ÚÁØ¿µ °­³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2021.01.25 19:25

It has been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic was first introduced to the world. Our lives have drastically changed as wearing masks have become a social norm. In the midst of a global crisis that the pandemic has put the world on, a mutation of the virus triggered a new lockdown in the UK and possibly the whole world.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the mutant coronavirus, which has spread from the UK, has some possibilities where the current molecular testing cannot detect those mutants. A change in the genome system of the virus can cause a malfunction in the molecular testing, unable to clearly distinguish the contaminated and the uncontaminated. Because of this mutation, the testing methods of the companies Thermo Fisher Scientific, Applied DNA Science, and Mehta Bio-Tech need some changes to discern the contaminated effectively.
There was also a mutation in South Africa, which also raises more concern about how we should counteract these mutations. For the mutation that happened in South Africa, there were several changes in the spike(S) protein. The spike protein, a protein that enables the virus to enter and infect the human cells, acts as a key factor in the contamination process. Luckily, the current vaccines are thought to still be effective against the mutants in South Africa since the various mutations have not altered the shape of the spike protein.

Although the world has adapted to the pandemic crisis to some extent, we still have to be vigilant and alerted as the virus is posing new threats every day. The most urgent need is a development in the biotechnological field to effectively counteract the mutating viruses. Although there are still numerous obstacles to go over, the efforts and hardships that humankind will face will become a base for future developments.
