On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden, the former vice president under President Barak Obama, was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. In normal circumstances, Washington D.C. would see hundreds of thousands of people flock to the city, swarming the National Mall and selling out hotels. However, due to COVID-19, the White House organizers urged Americans to avoid traveling to the capital. Only about 1,000 socially distanced guests, including former Presidents Barack Obama, Geroge W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, attended the inauguration. Donald Trump remained absent from the inaugural ceremony making him the first president to skip a successor's inauguration since Andrew Johnson in 1865.

The Grammy winner Lady Gaga belted out an emotional and powerful rendition of the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," at the inauguration. She was followed by Jennifer Lopez, who sang "This Land is Your Land" and "America the Beautiful." Also, country star Garth Brooks sang a soulful a capella rendition of "Amazing Grace." While Biden's inauguration set to be a star-studded event, there was little question that a new star had also emerged: 22-year-old National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman recited her poem "The Hill We Climb," cementing a memorable moment during the ceremony.

Biden said he would be a president for "all Americans." He made unity a focus of his remarks, as he urged Americans to come together to overcome the many challenges the nation has. "This is democracy's day," he said, in his first statement after taking the oath of office. "The will of the people has been heard...Democracy has prevailed."
"So thank you for this honor. I will give my all to you," Biden concluded his remarks promising to give his all to the job of becoming the new President.

조 바이든의 취임식

2021년 1월 20일, 버락 오바마 대통령 시절 부통령이었던 조 바이든이 미국의 46대 대통령으로 취임했다. 이전의 대통령 취임식 때는 수십만 명의 사람들이 워싱턴 D.C.로 몰려들어 내셔널 몰 과 호텔에 많은 사람들로 꽉 찬 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 그러나 코로나19 사태로 인해, 백악관 주최측은 미국인들에게 여행을 삼가하도록 지시했고 조 바이든 대통령 취임식에는 버락 오바마, 조지 부시, 빌 클린턴 등 전 대통령들을 포함한 약 1000명 정도의 사람들만 사회적 거리두기를 두고 참석하게 했다. 반면, 도널드 트럼프는 바이든의 취임식에 참석하지 않아 1865년 앤드루 존슨 이후 후임자 취임식을 생략한 첫 대통령이 되었다.

그래미상 수상자인 레이디 가가는 취임식에서 애국가 "The Star-Spangled Banner"를 감성적이고 강렬하게 불렀으며 제니퍼 로페즈는 "This Land is Your Land"와 "America the Beautiful"를, 컨트리 스타인 Garth Brooks는 소울 가득한 아카펠라 곡 “Amazing Grace”를 불렀다. 여러 유명 스타들의 연주로 바이든의 취임식은 성공적으로 진행되었다. 유명 스타들 사이에서 22세의 전국청소년 시인상 수상자인 아만다 고먼은 자신의 시 "The Hill We Climb" 을 읊으며 취임식 중 가장 기억에 남는 장면을 연출해 새로운 스타의 탄생을 알렸다.

조 바이든 대통령 당선자는 취임식 연설에서 자신이 "모든 미국인"을 위한 대통령이 될 것이라고 강조하였다. 그는 ‘통합'에 초점을 맞추어 연설을 이어나가며, 미국이 짊어지고 있는 많은 도전들을 극복하기 위해 국민들이 힘을 모을 것을 주장했다.

그는 취임 선서를 끝낸 뒤 첫 담화에서 "오늘은 민주주의의 날"이라고 말하며 "국민의 뜻이 전해져...민주주의가 승리했다"고 전했다. 끝으로 그는 자신의 영광을 국민들에게 돌리며 자신의 모든 것을 국민들에게 바치겠다고 약속했다.
