The Future of Surgeries
À̹®Çü °­³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2021.02.04 20:32

Surgeons do not rely only on their eyes when they are performing surgery. Palpation, percussion, the sound their tools make during surgery, their medical knowledge, and prior experiences all heavily influence a procedure. Current surgical robots strictly follow their programming. When unexpected situations occur, they lack sensing capabilities to proceed.

To overcome such limitations, the FAROS project sets out to incorporate widefield mapping, auditory and haptic sensors to engineer superior surgical robots. Balgrist University Hospital, King’s College London, KU Leuven, and Sorbonne University are working together in FAROS (Functionally Accurate Robotic Surgery). With Sorbonne University’s strong role in robotics, King’s College London providing advanced artificial intelligence, Balgrist University Hospital bridging computer science and clinical research, and KU Leuven leading sensory technology, the project is a combination of different strengths of each university.

FAROS will be tested on complex spine surgeries to show their effectiveness. Assessing the situation on the spot and determining the optimal procedure is what the scientists behind the project are hoping to apply to the next generation of surgical robots. The cognitive and physical intelligence of such devices will prove extraordinary in the medical field in the days to come.

With the successful result of this project, whether people would feel more comfortable with human surgeons or robots may change drastically. Robots and artificial intelligence replacing doctors and hospital employees may not be too far off in the future than we think.

FAROSÀÇ È¿°ú¸¦ º¸¿©ÁÖ±â À§ÇØ º¹ÀâÇÑ Ã´Ãß ¼ö¼ú·Î ½Ã¹üÀ» º¸ÀÏ °ÍÀ̶ó°í ÇÑ´Ù. ÇöÀå¿¡¼­ »óȲÀ» ÆÇ´ÜÇÏ°í ÃÖÀûÀÇ ÀýÂ÷¸¦ °áÁ¤ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀÌ ÀÌ ÇÁ·ÎÁ§Æ®¿¡¼­ ÀÏÇÏ´Â °úÇÐÀÚµéÀÌ Â÷¼¼´ë ¼ö¼ú ·Îº¿¿¡ Àû¿ëÇϱ⸦ ¹Ù¶ó°í ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù.
