Tis the season of New York Fashion Week, the most anticipated industry event brimmed with flamboyance and glamour. Only this year with a challenge- social distancing.

Undoubtedly, COVID-19 pandemic has brought an enormous effect on almost every industry including fashion. Though it may seem trivial in comparison to the industries that provide front line services, the fashion industry is a creative mecca to millions of employed professionals that greatly contributes to the global economy. However, because nobody wants to buy clothes to stay home in, the desire to curate the perfect outfit for that summer vacation has vanished resulting in a 34% decrease in clothing sales. This has been detrimental to the industry on all imaginable levels; retailers have closed, production has slowed, demand has declined, but most prominently, fashion shows have been stripped of its audience due to the restrictions around travel bans and other logistical health and safety reasons.

With most designers showcasing their collection digitally, the audience has replaced their stilettos for slippers as they watch the show at the comfort of their home. This has challenged designers to get even more creative and take advantage of modern-day technology. Albeit its lavish appearance, it is a crucial event for designers to be able to connect with global retailers and consumers. However, with the fashion industry generating harmful amount of carbon footprint, it may be an appropriate time to reflect and adjust business models and improve environmental impact.

Will embracing this digital era play a bigger role in the world of fashion in the days to come?
