Korea is known to be one of the strongest gaming countries. Although their title has been taken away from China for the last few years, Korea once again proved that they are the best as Damwon Gaming from Korea became the 2020 League of Legends World Champions. However, can Korea keep up with this glory? In the stove league of 2020, more than 30 esports players and coaches, including champion player Nuguri, have left Korea to compete in foreign leagues. Compared to that, only 20 players/coaches have returned to Korea. This phenomenon has occurred more than once. Since 2014, 20~40 players/coaches left Korea, and there was not a single year when more Koreans returned than that. Moreover, Korea has a history of a total of 30 teams being dismantled, due to economic or scandalous reasons. This makes Korea the region with the largest number of teams broken up in the world.

To fix these issues, the Korean league LCK has taken a massive stand to change its system. It is called LCK franchising. Franchising is when the league and the teams partner up to make league decisions together and share the profit of the league. Through this system, no more teams need to go through the promotion and relegation series. Also, the income and the prize money increased for all players and coaches, which provides a better work environment for them to focus solely on the competition. These positive changes have brought other companies such as Nongshim, KIA, KB, and Korea Yakult to sponsor actively on the teams. Although teams had to pay a massive price of about $10 million, now they would not have to worry about being disassembled due to economic issues.

However, this doesn’t mean that all problems have been solved in the LCK. Though Korea is one of the 4 major leagues in LOL esports, they are the last to go through franchising and even have the smallest funds. Players/coaches who value money over glory would still consider joining the foreign league, and LCK franchising may turn out meaningless. Therefore, more aids and benefits should be provided for the players/ coaches to stay in their home ground.

한국 e스포츠의 미래는 밝을까?
LCK, 올해부터 프랜차이즈화 진행

게임을 잘하는 강국으로 유명한 우리나라. 최근에는 중국이 최강으로 여겨졌지만, 2020년, 리그 오브 레전드의 가장 큰 국제대회인 롤드컵에서 우리나라 팀인 담원 게이밍이 우승을 하면서 다시 한번 왕좌를 되찾는 명예를 맞이했다. 그러나 과거 6년간 연속으로 우승하던 때의 영광을 계속 유지할 수 있을까? 2020년 스토브리그에는 롤드컵 우승을 한 장하권(Nuguri) 선수를 비롯하여 약 30명의 선수 및 코치진들이 해외로 이적 소식을 알렸다. 이는 한국 리그 LCK로 복귀한 20명의 선수·코치진보다 더 많은 숫자로, 우리나라를 떠나는 사람들이 더 많아 아쉬움을 표할 수밖에 없다. 이런 현상은 사실 올해가 처음이 아니다. 2014년부터 꾸준히 20~40명이 해외로 이적한 가운데 한 번도 해외에서 복귀한 선수·코치진이 더 많았던 경우가 없다. 이 외에도 우리나라 리그에서는 총 30개의 팀이 해체된 역사가 있다. 재정적인 문제나 여론의 논란이 되어서 해체된 경우가 대부분인데, 전 세계에서 가장 많이 해체됐다.

이런 문제점들을 개선하기 위해 LCK에서는 2021년부터 획기적인 변화를 단행했다. 바로 LCK의 프랜차이즈화다. 프랜차이즈화란 리그와 팀들 간에 파트너십을 맺어서 리그 관련 결정을 함께 내리고 리그 수익을 공유하는 체제를 말한다. 이 제도를 통해 더 이상 팀들이 1부와 2부를 오가는 승강전을 치룰 필요가 없어졌다. 이와 함께 최저연봉 및 상금이 인상되어 더 단단해진 수익 구조로 선수와 코치진들이 더 경기에 집중할 수 있게 됐다. 이런 긍정적인 변화들을 맞이한 팀들과 함께 다른 회사들이 스폰서십도 더 적극적으로 하게 됐으며, 실제로 이번 연도에 농심, KIA, KB, 한국야쿠르트 등 다양한 대기업들의 투자가 들어오면서 한국 e스포츠의 규모가 급격하게 증가하고 있다. 팀들마다 약 120억 이상의 가입비를 내야 했지만, 경제적으로 더 많은 지원을 받게 되어서 더 이상 팀들이 금전적인 이유로 해체되는 일들은 없을 것이다.

물론 아직 안심을 할 수 있는 상황은 아니다. 4개의 메이저 지역 중의 하나인 우리나라는 프렌차이즈화를 제일 늦게 했을 뿐더러, 총 투자금액도 가장 적다. 명예보다 돈을 더 중요한 목적으로 바라보는 선수들이 계속 해외로 이적하는 일들이 발생하면 프렌차이즈화의 의미가 희미해질 수 밖에 없다. 그렇기에 선수들이 계속 남아 있도록 앞으로 더 많은 지원 및 여러 제도들을 도입할 필요가 있다.
