What is a Museum? How the social role of museums have changed over time
ÃÖ¼öÁ¤ °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® | ½ÂÀÎ 2021.04.06 20:42

Simply put, museums can be defined as an institution in which objects of historical, scientific, artistic, or cultural interest are stored and displayed. However, fundamentally speaking, museums are systems of knowledge that provide specific guided thinking for the audience. But as the industry continues to advance and the role of museums starts to shift, it is essential to consider how messages are being delivered and whose ideas are being voiced.

The forerunner of the modern-day museums is the Wunderkammern, also referred to as the cabinet of wonders. This was a place of collection arranged by curious nobles, affluent merchants, and scholars to discuss the treasures of the world. Therefore, in earlier times, a collection was where new knowledge was created while trying to interpret and define these curious items. This created a culture of its own, for it demonstrates the reflection of the world that produced it during that time.

Museums today are organized in such a way that focuses on the experiences of the viewers by having it mostly organized either thematically, geographically, or periodically because it enhances the learning process by creating a guided flow for the audience. This led to a change in the system of knowledge through which these objects are brought together and displayed. The moment something is put on display for the general public, it is ordered in a certain way to say something in a very specific way because of the deliberate choices in the placement of these objects.

Over the course of museum history, there has been this evident act of democratization. It can be seen from how Wunderkammerns, cathedral collections, and royal’s collections that were personally held have changed to big national museums that target the public as its audience.
