Starting in February, South Korea has begun vaccination using AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine. While it seemed like the terror of coronavirus was coming to an end, it may have been too early to start celebrating. Worrisome cases of vaccinations are popping up all around the world. The vaccine may not be our savior yet.
On March 4th, three more people died after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, in a total of five fatalities. A 52-year-old patient in Jeonju died nearly two days after getting the vaccine shot. The patient had previously suffered a brain hemorrhage was in a long-term hospital care for a cardiovascular disease.

Another victim, man of age 58 who was also in long-term hospital care, passed away less than a day after being vaccinated. Lastly, a woman in her 20s died on the same day in Daejeon.

The side effects are not localized to South Korea, however, as Denmark also reported two people had suffered brain hemorrhages after receiving the vaccine, with one fatality. Many EU countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France, suspended the use of AstraZeneca vaccine until its safety is tested and approved again.

Although the World Health Organization is encouraging countries to continue the use of AstraZeneca’s vaccine, it is natural that people are afraid. Many experts claim there is no evidence of the vaccine causing blood clots responsible for the deaths, but this does not mean that people should not be wary of it. Those who already have health issues may want to reconsider taking the vaccine, as what we believed to be our savior may bring us doom.

아스트라제네카, 구원자 혹은 살인자?

한국은 2월부터 아스트라제네카사의 코로나바이러스 백신접종을 시작했다. 코로나의 공포가 끝나가는 것처럼 보였지만, 아직 축하하기에는 너무 이르다. 여러가지 문제를 보이고 있는 백신 접종 사례가 전 세계적으로 나타나고 있기 때문이다. 아스트라제네카는 우리의 구세주가 아닐지도 모른다.

우리나라도 지난 3월 4일 아스트라제네카 백신을 접종한 후 3명이 추가로 사망하여 총 5명이 사망했다. 전주에 있던 52세의 한 환자가 백신 주사를 맞은 지 이틀 만에 사망하였다. 그 환자는 이전에 뇌출혈을 앓았었고 심혈관 질환으로 장기간 병원에서 치료를 받던 중이었다.

또 다른 피해자인 58세 남성도 장기 입원 치료를 받던 중 백신을 접종한 지 하루도 안 돼 세상을 떠났다. 마지막으로 대전에서 같은 날에 20대 여성이 숨졌다.

하지만 이러한 끔찍한 부작용이 한국에만 국한되어 있지 않다. 덴마크에서도 백신 접종 후 2명이 뇌출혈이 일어났고 그중 1명이 사망했다고 보고하였다. 독일, 스페인, 이탈리아, 포르투갈, 프랑스 등 많은 EU 국가들은 아스트라제네카 백신의 안전성이 다시 테스트되고 승인될 때까지 사용을 중단한다고 하였다.

세계보건기구(WHO)는 각국에 아스트라제네카의 백신 사용을 계속 권장하고 있지만 국민들이 두려워하는 것은 당연하다. 많은 전문가들은 사망의 원인인 혈전이 백신 때문에 유발되었다는 증거는 없다고 주장하지만 그렇다고 사람들이 이를 경계하지 말라는 뜻은 아니다.

이미 건강상의 문제를 가지고 있는 사람들은 백신 복용을 다시 한번 고려해야 할 필요가 있다. 우리가 구세주라고 믿었던 백신이 우리에게 역효과를 가져다 줄 수도 있기 때문이다.
