Korea First Meets Psychological Cubism: George Condo

The Page Gallery, located in Galleria Foret, Seongsu-dong, Seoul, held a private exhibition of George Condo, displaying approximately 20 pieces. George Condo is an American contemporary visual artist who has emerged since the 1980s. He is a famous artist who worked on the album cover for Kanye West in 2010, and G-Dragon continuously collects Condo’s work. His works are known for their mixture of chaos and beauty, and Condo argues that the potential of art is not to invent but to reconstruct and innovate.

His portraits are reminiscent of Picasso's Cubism, but there are subtle differences. Condo calls it “artificial realism” or “psychological cubism” to capture various emotions drawn inside a human being. He focuses on expressing the emotions of the figure in his work with various facial expressions and gestures and then merging them into one place. If you take a look closely at the overlapping figures, you can find human-like figures expressing countless emotions such as joy, anger, and sadness.

The "Red and Green and Purple Portrait'' (2019) is extremely complicated and grotesque, making it hard to recognize that it is a human face. The face of the figure outlined with black paint on a vibrant red background and the faded purple and green colour filling the gaps between the lines made a strong impression even though they are not a common combination of colours. The face of the figure had two eyes and two mouth shapes and seems as if the figure is shouting, due to its open mouth and protruding cheekbones.

Condo seems to have created a complicated face - a mixture of joy, anger, fear, and pain - by compressing all the emotions in this single figure. This shows his style of using psychological cubism for his works, which is again combining different emotional states into one figure with different dimensions mixed.
In April 2020, "Antipodal Renewal" (2005) was sold for 1.3 million dollars (USD) at Sotheby's, breaking the highest price in online auction history. The Page Gallery announced they will make advance reservations for viewing the exhibition, considering the COVID-19 situation.
