Korea has the highest suicide rate in OECD countries every year. With the recent increase in the suicide rate due to the prolonged Coronavirus, people realized once again that suicide is a serious social problem.

Until recently, however, our society has still regarded suicide as a personal problem. According to the "National Attitude Survey on Life Respect Awareness," 83% of the survey participants said suicide is abnormal behavior, and 50% answered that they would feel ashamed of their families who committed suicide.

This negative perception further increases the risk of suicide. While searching for the media that could change the negative perception and prejudice of suicide, I found the movie called "Thread of Lies," which realistically reflected the problem of suicide.

"Thread of Lies" is a movie about a mother and sister Man-ji's lives after the youngest daughter Chun-Ji killed herself. Mom and Manji go through a tough time due to Chunji’s suicide. However, they never hide or be ashamed, and at last they are finally able to overcome it. In the film, the image of an ordinary middle school student was reflected in the character of Chunji, showing that suicide is a problem that can happen to anyone rather than an abnormal person.

Various social defects, including bullying, which was the cause of death in the movie, economic problems such as living and unemployment, mental problems such as depression, and teenagers' grades and school entrance problems, eventually put people at risk of suicide. If suicide is driven by individual responsibility, not by society's problem, the country will never be able to escape from the highest suicide rate. Also, the movie shows that the family's suicide was not a matter that the families have to hide or be ashamed of. The movie would encourage them to stand brave.

The film reflects a message that our society needs to recognize and prevent social problems that lead people to suicide risks. Through the message in"Thread of Lies," hopefully many will be inspired and saved from committing suicide.

'우아한 거짓말'이 보여준 현실, 인식을 바꾸다.
우리나라 자살률 1위, 이유는 무엇일까?

우리나라는 여전히 매년 OECD 국가에서 가장 높은 자살률을 기록하고 있다. 최근 코로나19의 장기화로 인해 자살률이 더 증가하면서 자살은 다시 한번 심각한 사회문제로 거론되고 있다.

하지만 최근까지도 우리 사회는 여전히 자살을 개인적인 문제로만 몰아세우고 있다. ‘생명존중 인식에 대한 국민 태도 조사’ 에 따르면, 설문 참여자의 83%는 자살은 비정상적인 행동이라고 답했으며, 50%는 가족이 자살하면 부끄러움을 느낄 것이라고 답했다.

이와 같은 부정적인 인식은 자살 위험을 더 높이고 있다. 자살에 대한 부정적 인식과 편견을 바꿀 수 있는 대중적인 매체를 알아보다가, 자살에 대한 현실적 문제를 사실적으로 반영한 ‘우아한 거짓말’이라는 영화를 보게 되었다.

‘우아한 거짓말’ 은 막내 천지가 자살이라는 극단적인 선택으로 세상을 떠난 후 엄마와 언니 만지의 이야기를 담은 영화이다. 엄마와 만지는 천지의 죽음에 슬퍼하고 힘들어하지만, 결코 숨지 않고 극복하며 열심히 살아가려는 모습을 보인다. 이 영화에서는 주변에서 볼 수 있는 평범한 중학생의 모습을 천지의 모습에 비추어 보여주면서, 자살은 비정상적인 사람이 아닌 평범한 누구에게도 일어날 수 있는 문제라는 것을 보여주었다.

천지의 죽음의 원인이었던 왕따 문제를 비롯해, 생활고와 실업 등의 경제 문제, 우울증 등의 정신적 문제, 또한 청소년들의 성적, 진학 문제 등 다양한 사회적 결함이 결국 사람들을 자살 위험으로 내몬다. 자살을 사회가 아닌 개인의 책임만으로 몰아세운다면, 우리나라는 자살률 부동의 1위에서 절대 벗어날 수 없을 것이다. 또한, 무관심했던 과거의 모습들을 반성하고 다시 당당하게 일어서는 가족들의 모습을 통해 가족의 자살은 숨기거나 부끄러워해야 하는 문제가 아니라는 것을 나타내었다.

이 영화는 우리 사회가 사람들을 자살 위험으로 이끄는 사회적 문제들을 인식하고 예방해야 한다는 메시지를 전해준다. '우아한 거짓말'이 보여준 현실이, 많은 이들을 극단적인 선택으로부터 구해낼 수 있는 발걸음이 되길 바란다.
